New Passport Requirements for travel to/from the U.S.

This is a friendly reminder that new document requirements for travel to/from the U.S. are expected to come into effect January 8th, 2007, subject to U.S. government approval.

At that time, all passengers will be required to present a valid
passport when travelling by air between Canada and the United States. This includes Canadian and U.S. citizens.

It is strongly recommended that those who do not hold a valid passport apply for a passport well in advance of travel plans.

As early as January 1, 2008, a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security, will be required when travelling by land or sea (including ferries).

From: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

- On January 8, 2007 ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document.

- As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

I wanna know why it says that Canadian passports are 'not renewable'. Does this mean I have to go through all that running around again when mine expires?

that is crap if it is true.

I don't see the point in running around to get everything done and signed again. That is actually rather annoying.

Uh, ya.

I'm still the same person.

And this means you basically have to reapply when you still have one so you don't end up with a gap if you're planning on going away.
