REVIEW: Mark Farina @ Stereo (Nov-10-06)
trekked up from Toronto and had a blast. It was 2nd time at Stereo, but the first that stayed for a full night (um, morning) there.
Farina was really good...not mind blowing, IMHO. It wasn't as upbeat and funky a set compared to at Sonic this summer. HeThis time, it was more relaxed, leisurely tempo. Having said that, Stereo wasn't the crowded f**king sauna that was Sonic that night, so the night was easily *way* better overall this time around. Sonic may be Toronto's Stereo...but it's not Stereo.
Stereo is head and shoulders above virtually any club here in Toronto, IMHO. Total package...cheap for a top DJ ($25 advance), a stellar sound system that puts most here to shame, simple but nice space, very cool crowd, nice staff, no lineups to speak of (to get in, at coat check or in washrooms), etc. Perfect size in that it's large enough to host 'big names', but still has an intimate vibe. I really have nothing negative to say about the place at all other than it's a bit too far away for my liking
I think we stayed until about 8am and it was still going pretty stong. I'm curious to know what time Farina finished, but either our our Montreal friends don't seem to be as enthusiastic about review threads or not many MTLTAs were there?
Thanks very much to Paul and Kate for the always awesome hospitality...much appreciated and always fun!
btw...VIA1 FTW. Though not the cheapest way to get to Montreal for a weekend, a 4.5 hour train ride where the ticket includes booze, a meal and ridiculous space is soooo nice. Highly recommended.
