i dj 12 hrs a week, but spend very little time practicing. i basically hit a plateau and i need to keep moving forward. I have purchased ableton 6, djm800, and cdj1000mk3's within the last month... i still have to figure out ableton and how to use it w/ the djm lol. i was just curious how much time you guys spend a week practicing and expanding your knowlege/skills.

I bedroom DJ only, but I spend about 4 or 5 hours a week on average, I'd say, behind the decks. It really depends on how late I have to work, how much homework the kids have on a given night, etc.

i also hit the plateau that you speak of even though im always expanding my skills and learning things here and there. typically i used to practice about 4 hours a DAY (which is how i got to where im at now after only spinning for 5 months or so) but nowadays mostly spin about 8 hours a week not including gigs.

Avg 1-2hrs per day.

I'm all over the place with it. Some weeks I will play every day. Other weeks, I won't touch them at all. I think it is good in a sense that I will always keep what I do fresh and when I come back to it I have something new to bring to the table.

I spend like 5 hours a day listening to music, and only about 4 or 5 hours a week practicing. Like 10 hours or more a week in the summer time when I don't have school. I definitely find it easier when I listen to tracks over and over and then go to mix with them and know them by heart. Kind of like studying for a test. Spend more time studying for the test then actually taking it. Though actually practicing would help me a lot more, I kind of like to save my hearing.

The vast majority of my time is spent listening to and searching for new music.

Man, you gotta learn to use Ableton. When people started ranting and raving about how Ableton basically made anything possible with regards to DJing, I was interested and downloaded the demo to see what all the fuss was about.

I started to mess about with it and thought what the fuck are they whittering on about, I can't even figure out how to load a song. I went throught the DJ tutorial that comes with it and it sort of gave me a vague idea of what was going on, but I still couldn't warp the tracks for shit. I started going through the Ableton forum and read lots of stuff on there, and now I can warp a track on the fly in less than 60 seconds and have an assload of fun just messing about with a keyboard and a mouse.

I'm actually toying with the idea of keeping my car off the road for the next 3 months so I can buy an 800 for use with Ableton, because it really is that much fun. When you start playing with loops,samples, layering tracks etc, there's not a lot you can't do.

I spend about 5-9 hours a week practicing. Majority of time spent is searching for music, buying music, filtering out shit music, then burning the tunes I like.
