'Gay attack' on Israel synagogue

This is kinda funny and a bit of a surprise at the same time; militant gay protesters. Wow, didn't see that one coming. Demonstrations of this type near/in religiously significant places (like the city of Jerusalem) isn't appropriate. It only hurts their cause as it demonstrates a lack of tolerance and utter disregard and disrespect on their part. There's plenty of places to protest/rally. Can some Israeli's shed some light on this? Why would they deliberately pick Jerusalem? Is it a reactionary response to orthodox/more culturally conservative Jews?

EDIT: I mean, it's obviously going to cause shit to get stirred up. Didn't things get a quite out of hand last time? Like I said, it creates alot more tension and really hurts their cause.

'Gay attack' on Israel synagogue

A Tel Aviv synagogue has been attacked and daubed with graffiti, apparently in response to religious Jewish attempts to ban a gay pride march in Jerusalem.

Ultra-orthodox Jews have opposed the march, scheduled for next week.

Windows in the synagogue were smashed and the walls were painted with the slogan: "If we can't march in Jerusalem you won't walk in Tel Aviv".

On Wednesday evening ultra-orthodox protesters clashed with police in a district of Jerusalem.

No-one was injured in the Tel Aviv attack, which took place in a central area of the city and was reported early on Thursday.

Ultra-orthodox anger

Itai Pinkas, a member of Tel Aviv's city council and a gay community leader, told Israel's Haaretz newspaper the attack was a "malicious provocation".

"The [gay] community's struggle has always promoted values of tolerance, understanding and consideration, and such violent acts have not and will not be used as a means in the just struggle for attaining full civil rights," he said.

The planned gay pride march in Jerusalem is scheduled to take place next Friday, but police are yet to issue permits for the event.

On Wednesday night protesters in the ultra-orthodox Jerusalem neighbourhood of Mea Shearim threw eggs and rocks at cars, reports said.

Three policemen were reportedly injured, and eight demonstrators were detained.

Further protests are expected in the area in the run-up to the march.

Dude, I used to live in the (SF) Bay Area. Just because I live in Texas now doesn't mean I adopted any prejudices typicaly found in the South. Plus, Austin is pretty liberal (relatively speakings, atleast for the South; doesn't seem that liberal to me having moved here from SF).

EDIT: That doesn't mean I like being hit on by gay guys though.

No, that it's the only place (in the US) that I can think of where gay people are left alone and I have far more exposure to "gay culture" than you for example.

Hello? Have you ever been to Atlanta during Gay Pride Weekend? It's a frigging' nightmare. We have a huge gay population down here. They can safely walk down the street without having bibles thrown at them--it's quite impressive!
