M.A.N.D.Y @ Spin (Review)

Ok

So we hang out for a while at the apt. and drink some beers to let time fly by. Me and my friends were getting anxious as we waited for the night to get late enough to hit the club. The beers where not working and the music was not good enough to make anxiety dissapear.

It's 10:30 pm, we decide to get our asses off the couch and hit the club. As we entered the club we were kind of surprised to see an almost empty dancefloor. The opening dj was playing a variety of tech house records and electro. Chava, a mexican dj that has played in places such as Cabo San Lucas and L.A, was trying to get people on a steady groove. However, his set was drawing on monotony. Lance, took the decks for only one track and apparently Chava picked it up from there.

It's almost 11:30 pm and we are still waiting for M.A.N.D.Y, Chava's set is now louder and faster. At this point, my friends and I are not as happy as we usually would at this time of the night. The warm up dj is supposed to play "warm up" tracks. Chava was playing well over the 128-129 bpm range, annoying.

It finally strikes midnight and the two european djs walk into the club, carrying their box of records with them. They seemed happy and satisfied, for them "America" is another frontier, they definitely transmitted a different vibe than any of the other djs I've seen so far. I was so excited to see both of these djs use old and new technology, vinyl and cds (back to back) aswell as being very friendly and down to earth.

As they took over the decks, the crowd knew they where in for a ride.

They started their set with a more laid back groove, a blend of tech house with a jazzy feel to it. It wouldn't take more than two tracks for them to realize that they needed to pick up the pace. Suddenly, an array of tracks are played with consistency and rhythm, the dancefloor gradually transforms, the people are going crazy as they drop choon after choon. After 15 minutes of their set,the other half of M.A.N.D.Y, Phillip takes over the decks and plays the almost jaw-breaking "Fool of the New City" from Egoexpress, at this point it's all about getting physical.

Tech house, minimal here and there, quality house records and a great charisma made this night one to remember. The fact is that having such underground djs play in Austin, means alot to the scene and to us who love the music. Another level in Underground dance music was exposed last night, hopefully we'll hear more forward-thinking music in the future.

Thanks to all the crew at Slow Motion and Spin.

Holden's next... Can't wait.

Great review. So just how many people actually showed up for this? I am curious just how many people from this region really know who they are.

I'd say about 150 people were there, thats counting all the posers who just lurked around the bar.

Ryan, didn't I tell you to quit wearing that green dress? You're confusing people
