Look into Sandisk's Sansa E200 series. Beats the crap out of ipod nano. Better functionality, better capacity, flash memory, possibility to expand memory (up to 2 gigs more with miniSD cards), FM tuner included (rather than paying +50$ to add one to your crappod), possibility to record off the FM tuner, microphone (rather than paying another 50$ for the crappod), slightly lower price, possibility to buy extra battery packs and swap them in seconds (for the new ipod models, batteries will die out after a year or two, then you need to send them in and pay up to 70$ to get them replaced because they can't be changed without opening up the ipod). Uploading tracks is just drag and drop. Doesn't work with macs though (but who uses macs anyways!)
Otherwise you could look into Creative Lab's Zen. Pretty good bang for the buck. Again, more and better features than the ipods. The only problem with Zens is that the firmware has a tendency to freeze up.
