Trance: Why does it sound so terrible when played really loud?

Hello, kinda new to the forums, taking a chance at my very own thread (yay!). So the title says it all: Why does trance sound so crappy when you hear it really loud at a "party?" I've been to "parties" before where they've got the trance/house main room, a side room for jungle and a side room for hardcore. I've got to say, even though I love trance, it's more fun being in the jungle or hardcore rooms. I haven't been to a club yet because I just turned 21, so I don't know if they are any different.

When I play trance at home on my little sound system, it sounds great! You can hear all of the layering in the tracks, the individual melodies and beats, it's just fantastic! Then I go to a huge "party" and the same track sounds like crap. All I can hear is the *thump* *thump* and then a little *doodley* *doodley*, then back to *thump* *thump*. Jungle tracks sound so cool when the bass flares out and the beat rolls back in, and hardcore makes your head explode. Does trance suck because they play it in the main room and the sound system can't handle it? Maybe melodic trance doesn't lend itself to being played loud? Anyone in the know, please enlighten me.

Some clubs and parties have crap sound systems and EQing, DJs who abuse the mixers and speakers, etc. Can leave things sounding pretty shitty. And yeah, it sucks.

"Thump thump doodley doodley" sounds like an accurate description of the sound in many clubs.

That's basically it in a nutshell, someone leaving the EQ settings on 'doof doof' rather than a gentler spread across the range.

Well, that depends on may things. Since trance usually uses a wide spectrum of high, mid and low frequency sounds, you need to setup the PA right, otherwise it just sounds shit. Then - like MrJiveBoJingles said - there's noob DJs who EQ the tracks to death or are too dumb to realize that their signal is clipping or whatever.

At last it also depends on what you declare as trance. If for you trance is recent stuff by Sean Tyas or Selu Vibra then I can assure you: They are also crappy when played on your home system

Okay, so do the dj's not usually have access to the EQs? There must be some kind of main EQ not on the mixer then? I'd hope any respectable trance dj who knew it would sound like crap with the bass cranked all the way up would change the settings.
