When to replace needles??

When do you guys replace your needles?
I use the Ortofon concorde pro silver.
I've broken needles from stupid mistakes and other misc crap.
I usually replace them every month just for the hell of it, but I never really know when the recommended time to replace them is.

My drunk ass friend passed out while spinning records on my tables and left 2 records spinning for 8 hours. The needle wore a small little groove at the end of the record (no damage to the vinyl really). I want to know that after those 8 hours, if I should replace the needle? They sound fine, but I am just not sure that needles are meant to play at the end of the record.... for 8 hours.

(and yes my careless friend is paying for replacements)

I bought the multipack of ortofons, and the guy who sold em to me told me that he didnt want to see me buying them for another 3 years(meaning I had 1 on, 2 in the case, =3 years, so 1 year per set)

so I think you are spending wayy too much money!

I think generally needles are durable; especially Ortofon ones. once a year is probably a good bet. For me, if the sound level starts to go down (one side louder than the other), normally a clean sweep of the needles with a brush should do the trick.
I don't know about the 8 hour thing, though.. the situation sounds too bizarre to warrant a suggestion.

i have ortofons as well.
the manual says if you spin allot replace them every 6 months.
i do like 6-9 months. but don't let time decide. when your needles start to jump when you que your records, or your highs just don't sound as clear as they used to be - replace em. no point in replacing them too often as ull blow cash, but don't keep em for like 3 years or you'll damage ur records

I have some pretty shitty stanton carts, 520's I think (the DJ Craze models), and I've prob gotten like 50 hours out of them and now the cymbols are starting to sound shitty. When you start to lose sound quality you need to new needles. Any recommendations for my next pair?

For my Trackmasters it says that you should check ur stylus every 250-300 hours, so i guess you can use ur Ortofons for like 6 months or so...
