dude
i totally agree
these people that say that oakie sucks are just ignorant like u said... i got a chance to hear oakie live at wemf, now i have to say that his mixing was just incredible, i remember him remixing a track live, that is, he played one track over the other for like 15 min, that just blew me away... granted his track selection sucked, u cant base just on that that he sucks as a dj, thats just stupid... look on napster for oakie live at gatecrasher, and after listenin to that set, and hearing a 10 min live remix of lizard with 3 buildups, if you come back and tell me oakie sucks, thats just really really really really dumb...

ya whatever. Why because he plays stuff people actually know, heaven forbid!
That's the problem with U.S. and Canadian DJ's, they play some obscure underground trance that no one has ever heard of, which makes them feel like they are "in the know". But there is a reason no one has heard it before...it's shit.

I disagree. Have you checked out the unknown tracks forum lately? This excitement that brews when people come back from a party and are dying to know the name of an unknown spreads like a virus. If DJ's didn't take the risk of playing experimental trance, chances are that producers wouldn't experiment! However, I do agree with you that people think it's cool to dis Oakenfold and should start forming opinions based on fact instead of what others think.

I've only made a post dissing oakie once ... after I saw him spin live. Before then, I thought he was the complete shit because of Resident and Tranceport, and I woulda killed to see him spin anywhere. But hearing him live was a complete let down. Like I said before, he barely touched the mixing board (too busy signing autographs for the ENTIRE duration of his set), and his track selection was boring and uninspiring. There was no feeling to his set at all. It was like he preplanned his set from the get go by taking some new tracks from his latest cd, then threw on some songs from tranceport as his "climax", then went back to songs from his latest cd.
Now I agree I hate a lot of local dj's who play random crap that is simply crap, but that doesn't mean I want to hear what's on my hard drive at a party. Take Tiesto at the Docks for instance. Now you say he spun a lot tracks that we knew beforehand, and you're absolutely correct. But have you looked at the tracklisting for that set yet? There are songs that I've never heard before ever, and there are songs that still need to be Id'd. There are songs that I WANT ID'D. FOR GOD SAKES SOMEBODY ID THEM CUZ THEY ARE AWESOME!! Now Tiesto is good not just because he plays the popular songs that everybody knows (otherwise a dj could just spin a time to burn, zombie nation, silence, etc. and be classified as good). He was good because he had a good track selection, his set was original, (who expected that housey song Blaze - To my Beat ... that was awesome) and best of all he tread the fine line between playing for the crowd and playing for himself. I like to hear originality in sets and hell, if they all played for the crowd then all DJ's would sound alike.
I'm not saying that Oakenfold sucks, I'm saying that the set I heard him spin live sucked (in my opinion). Now I didn't need to be there to hear him spin live in Ibiza or Creamfields to know he was freakin awesome at one point in time, but as to whether he's still as good now ... I dunno. Anyway, I heard he's coming to town sometime soon and I'll definetely go because I want my opinion of him to be proved wrong, but we'll see.
BTW, TranceGoodie, I agree with you that you shouldn't knock a live set unless you were there because being there live and hearing it on MP3 are two different things. But what did you mean when you said you have to hear him at Ibiza to pass judgement? Is his set magically better in Ibiza or something? I agree that crowds and vibes add to the effect of a DJ but regardless of how loud the guy next to me is screaming, it's not going to drastically make a set better or worse. Yes, yes, the older I get the more I get longer and windier. Oh well ... deal

not exactly.......
Trance Goodie....
I assume you are talking about my response to the Oakie Information thread, where I called him Joakenfold. First off, in no way am I trying to look "cool" by dissing Oakenfold. I am simply stating what I feel about him, from the 2 times I saw him play live. I agree with you in that his older sets, and those from Ibiza are amazing, which is part of the reason I think so low of him. The other reasons are because he simply doesn't look like he gives a crap while spinning. At WEMF he would go talk with some girl while a song played...then came back to "mix" another record on...then go talk to her again. Just download his set from WEMF and listen for yourself..sure..it's different from being there, honestly...you can hear better where he screw's up.
And no, I haven't seen him live at Ibiza or Creamfields, but have you? Telling me that I don't know anything because I haven't seen him live there is pretty ignorant, especially if you haven't yourself experienced him live in such a place.
And where are you talking about in this part of your post? "Now please don't give me that, "i saw him in t.o. and he was shit" crap either, because that crowd was a mean age of 14 and the venue looked completely empty, i felt sorry for him."??? What does the mean age of people at event have to do with ANYTHING?! The 2 times I saw him live there were thousands of others there with me...
I respect your opinion, but when you bash mine don't expect to get away without a response.
Peace,
Steve

Oakie is full of it
Yeah okay, Oakie has been around since god knows when, and ya he may have earn his ranks to be the top dj in the world; He may have been great, and probably still probably be a great dj if he wasn't so full of himself. The money and fame got to him, and frankly i don't think he gives a damn about the people. Hearing his mixes and live recorded sets from gatecrasher and what not, I was intrigued to see this man perform live, but only to learn he was just a big disappointment when he came to T.O. I saw him twice, once at the Betterliving centre and once at Wemf. I wasn't impressed either times.
My girlfriend accidently met him at wemf. (she didn't even know it was him) He asked her for a cig, which was weird cuz he didn't even smoke it when she offered to light it for him. He introduced himself as "paul" and told her that he just finished spinning. He asked her if he liked his set, then being very blunt my girl said she didn't like it at all. Then he told her he didn't want to play a good set, cuz "the crowd here sucks" or something on those lines, in his cocky british accent.
SO frankly he DOESN't even CARE about the T.O scene. He's here just to make money folks. Then my gf told him, "don't make excuses on the crowd, you just SUCK in general, it's your responsibility to hype up the crowd, not the other way around you pompous prick!" I wish i was there to see it..
That's my opinion, and so are those of other people that have met him, like nick and joey (sonicstate guys) that have dealt with him personally, also thinks he got an inflated head.

this is off topic, but maybe david wells is right.. toronto fans have no respect for people. unless we are winning, we boo, unless we get what we want, we boo. if oakie spins a crappy set, we boo, and we hold it against him, until he comes & brings corsten & avb with him.. if corsten came, spun a shitty set, he'd be the next oen to be flamed.. |
Ummmm I'm not quite getting what you're saying. If the god/king of trance spun a crappy set I would say so too him and diss him. I don't care where you came from, who you spun for, or how much popularity you have, if you suck I'm not gonna lie to you.
