To be able to mix two records seamlessly into each other you have to adjust the speed of one of the records so that it's running more or less exactly as fast as the other. You do this by adjusting the pitch. Why? Not a lot of tunes are created with equal tempos. Therefore one of the tracks will, as you do the transition, begin to slide "out of sync" with the other, and it will sound really terrible. I wish I had my turntables where I am now, if I did I would post a sound clip so that you could hear what I mean.
What I really, really recommend you to do, is to read some articles about basic DJing. Try for example the tutorial section of IVibes (www.ivibes.de), it has some easy-to-understand tutorials on basic mixing. And remember to start with tutorial 1.
