I would recommended either "Total Recorder" or "Audio Magic".

I use Cool Edit to record myself. The software packaging that came with your sound card should have a recording package bundled with it. You can use this as a start to get acquainted with recording on your box but to be honed the software that comes with most soundcards usually isn’t very good.

I use SoundForge 5.0 myself. great little app, does the trick and has all the bells&whistles you'll need.

doesnt really matter what you use, aslong as you can record a mix in stereo, and with whatever quality you want. you'll probably want standard CD quality (44/16) which all the programs mentioned here support. I use sound forge now, its good. pretty much the same as cool edit pro. Just get what ever is more accessible to you.

i guess it depends on your audio setup.

my mixer is connected to an audio compressor then on the other side is my amp. the amp has line level outs that connect to:
a) my minidisc deck
b) my soundboard's line in
c) a tape deck

i then record the line in from the soundboard on the PC if I want to record on the 'puter.

you can use your mixers record out to the soundcard line in - however, the record out of most mixers doenst get effected by the main level control. i tend to use the level control a bit to keep the level solid, and I prefer to record after the compressor ... so using the record out is pointless for me...

A compressor is on the top of my list of things to get for my set up. Having used them a few times I’ve seen how useful they are.

doc.. check out the behringer MDX2200.. it's cheap, very adjustable, and sounds good... for $100 you cant go wrong !!

I love having the compressor in front of the mixer - takes care of so many little things and adds a really unique sound.

When the bassline goes away and the breakdown kicks in... the level comes up and makes better use of the speakers. also enhances the effect of the EQs, and takes care of level issues with a quickness

the limiter built into the MDX2200 will also prevent you from overdriving your amp or busting your speakers because of sudden transients.
