Tomorrow I'm travelling to São Paulo. I won a scholarship and I will spend 5 days there. They'll provide me transportation and housing, but the food is on my own. Their total estimated cost (both for dinner and lunch) is ~100 U$. I wouldn't spend even half of that here in Brasília, so I decided I'm going to spend, at most 50 U$.

So, I was wondering, what do you stingy people do to avoid excessive expenses with food?

ps.: Fasting is not an option... at least, not until Thursday

Drinking nothing but water is the best way to save money on a food budget. Totally obvious advice, but since it's Sao Paulo, definitely drink nothing but aqua minerale.

I dunno what else though...granola bars for lunch and save your money and buy a modest meal at a cafe for dinner? $100 for 5 days is an exorbitant amount of money to spend on food, in my opinion. I bet $10 a day on food will buy you a restaurant meal each night and something light for lunch.

Eat at local-looking places rather than flashy places that cater to tourists. Part of the tourism gambit is that they try to separate as much cash from novice Americans as possible, so much of the food in tourist areas can be over-priced. Sometimes a dingy little cafe will have the same quality food as a place with a huge sign, plus a little local atmosphere.

On a nightly basis, if they crack out top cuts of steak and the whole works then brilliant.

My tips for cheap food, soup, noodles, pasta and bread you can make some brilliant dishes for hardly any money. Look around search your area if you see a popular place check it out it's bound to be good.

Best way to save money is to go to the market and buy food. Buy bread, cheese, and ham and eat sandwiches. Tuna is all pretty cheap. Eating out is always more expensive. Food will also save you money. Bananas are pretty filling.

If you want a decent and cheap dish here is ones all you need is.

Pancetta or Streaky Bacon (If streaky chop it up fine)
Some decent Olive Oil
Flatleaf Parsley
Spaghetti
Bread

Fry the pancetta up in the pan after it starts browning up add the bread. Boil a pan of hot water up cook the spaghetti when that's done drain the pasta. Add the bacon and bread mix to the pasta. chop up some parsley sprinkled all over a quick drizzle of olive oil a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Sorted!

just like venomX suggested, get stuff from markets and don't eat out all the time.

you'll save plenty of money!
