I think if you're patient you'll find that MIDI sequencing is just as capable as Reason's proprietary system. All you have to do to get real time feedback is highlight a bar, turn on looping, and draw your notes in the MIDI track same as you would in Reason.
Yes, there's a little bit of mental overhead remembering which note corresponds to which sample, but you get used to that quickly, and if you forget you can just click on the piano keys to play the associated samples.
But I personally will not try to convince you to stick with Cubase as opposed to going back to Reason. I think Cubase offers more possibilities and more efficient workflow, but it's certainly not for everyone.
I actually seem to remember a youtube video of someone throwing together some drumloops in Cubase in about half a minute... I'll let you know if I come across them again.
