Read This! Cubase and Drums/Percs

I've read so many times that Battery is the way to go but cant seem to find a way of working with it, my drums/percs always sound way too simple and I dont think I'm working with it right...I prefer Reasons drum machine but hate having two separate sequencer apps.

Could somebody who's pretty confident in using the two together possibly post a Cubase Project (I'm using SX3) and Battery Kit file (I'm using version 2) using a mix of Bass Drums and Perc so I can see what the potential is?

I would be really gratefull!

I'll give you a little trick that works well. Set up battery and two cells with three different samples in each cell. Make each sample play at different velocity levels(1 highest, 2nd middle, 3rd lower than the middle one. now set up Stepdesigner(cubase midi plugins) to trigger battery and plug in a pattern using only the notes that correspond to the battery cells you have put the samples in. now use the velocity settings in Stepdesigner and set it to high medieum and low levels to trigger your different samples. PLay around with it from here on out and you should come up with something.

Make sure you use different samples though...like open high hats, closed ect..

Limit out.

Tell me how it works out.

Step sequencer with Battery? Why not just stick with Fruityloops...

To the OP: I think you're going to have to explain more about what the problem is. Not to be snooty or anything but I don't see how it would make any difference what plugins are used to sequence drums; the simplicity or complexity is related to what is sequenced, not how it's sequenced, so it sounds more like a creativity thing to me. But, it's possible I'm just not fully understanding the question, which is the reason for asking for a more detailed explanation.

Maybe you should post a few screen shots outlining what you're trying to do - might make more headway than asking for somebody else's project, which I think isn't particularly valuable as a teaching tool anyway.

Just read your replies..I've found looking at someones project file in Reason and Cubase helped me kick start how all the components of the software work with eachother and made me understand allot more, but basically, Ive found I cant build a beat like you can with Reasons drum machine live to tweak it as easily than Cubase.

OP: Ill give your tip a go and get back here.

i switched from cubase and reason to solely cubase. i found battery better than the reason tools. i layer my kicks u pin battery then eq then and compress them using my vsts. tbh since the change my kicks have been much better.

I guess what I'm saying is I work better building beats in a drum machine than designing each drum/perc component in Battery and then having to put it together in cubase - I need to see/hear how a beat works in real time and play with it in real time.

I think I might go back to Reason...:/

just load the kicks into battery then create a new midi track. place your kicks in and loop it. i do this when trying to get kicks to fit well together. while the loop is playing i go back to battery and scroll through the kicks, adjust them to my liking then back to the seqeuncer and work on the rest of the track.

I think if you're patient you'll find that MIDI sequencing is just as capable as Reason's proprietary system. All you have to do to get real time feedback is highlight a bar, turn on looping, and draw your notes in the MIDI track same as you would in Reason.

Yes, there's a little bit of mental overhead remembering which note corresponds to which sample, but you get used to that quickly, and if you forget you can just click on the piano keys to play the associated samples.

But I personally will not try to convince you to stick with Cubase as opposed to going back to Reason. I think Cubase offers more possibilities and more efficient workflow, but it's certainly not for everyone.

I actually seem to remember a youtube video of someone throwing together some drumloops in Cubase in about half a minute... I'll let you know if I come across them again.

If you change the colour at the top of your midi editor in cubase from "velocity" to "pitch", the notes will change colour as you go up the scale - i find this helps a little bit when your trying to see which note corresponds to what channel in Battery, rather than having all notes the same colour, can get messy seeing what note is playing a hat or snare etc.......

I know exactly what you mean. Reason's Drum Machine is very user friendly so switching to Battery and another host can be daunting.

But...Battery is more powerful and once you've put the hard yards in to learn all about it, you will actually be able to create much better percs.

Not to say that ReDrum isn't capable of similar things with a few plugins though

GM Drum Map is your friend it seems. When I program my drums manually and work together with battery I tend to use that every now and then.

What you do to enable it is quite easy. In the sequencer, when you have selected a MIDI-track you see the info lane to the leftmost of the sequencer, right? (where you can selected wich VST the midi-track will use as output etc.)

3 steps below where you choose your vst for that midi-track you have the option to choose wich map to use. Select GM Map.

Now create a slice of midi in the sequencer and double click it to enter editing mode and voíla

I think you can figure out the rest

but if you want to make it really easy perc-wise you just grab a copy of stylus RMX at your local software shop, I basicly only use battery for kicks nowdays, the rest is done via Stylus RMX
