need a good laugh? ignorant quote on DJing

got into an argument with some douche on another board...

"They (DJs) have no "real" sense of music, otherwise they'd just let the records play through and not try to mix them with other records. Also, creating music from computerized sounds is crap, it's basically letting your computer be an instrument for you cause you're lazy."

Let me guess... this guy is a guitarist?
What sh*ts me is that through listening and producing electronic music I have to come to appreciate good music no matter the genre.

Yeah. I have had little friendly arguments with people on a couple occasions about the same thing. They said that there was nothing to it and that anyone could do it. It use to upset me, now I just laugh. I just tell them, "Look, give it a try if its so easy. You can even come to my spot and try it out on my equipment". Its really not even worth trying to explain it to these kinds of people anyway. I myself know what kinds of hell I have gone thru to get to the point I am at now, and trust me, I am not as far along as I would like to be. I have broken equipment to learn this, smashed mixers, sold my stuff at one time because I was so frusterated with it, had girls leave me cause I was not spending enough time with them, been broke because of it, all the sleepless hours, almost lost jobs, the list is endless. I have realized that there are alot of closeminded people out in the world. People that think they are always right. You could spend the rest of your life fighting with people like this. Its best to just let them think what they want. Plus, whats the reason your doing this? Bet its not to prove anything to anyone. Cause if it is, it will not last long anyway.

Mike

Was he listening to Trentemoller at the time?

(Not a dig, I'm a big fan - as is Beatport apparently...)

I remember about 15 years ago, when I was a massive Van Halen and Bon Jovi fan (ducks from all the abuse I'm gonna receive for that) - and the Acid scene had gone a lot more commercial and was getting to No.1 - a lot more radio play yadda yadda - I said pretty much the same thing - (I'm not proud of it).

But, looking back - the reason I said that was a) I wasn't listening to the right music - just the chart crap b) I had no idea WHAT I was listening to - and c) I felt 'musically threatened' as it seemed to be taking over.

Ignorance is an incredible thing - it can make a wanker out of a normally completely sane man. I've tried to be as open minded about music as I can since realising the error of my ways - I'll give it a chance - and then decide.

That said, I frikkin hate R+B...

I wouldn't fret about it too much.
In the immortal words of Sting... "It takes a man to see ignorance and smile".

This guy will probably have an epiphany at some point down the line and then he will be the first person to discover trance, in his own mind at least.

People like that are generally bad for the world whatever view they are defending be it music or politics.

Just take a trip to any room on this forum and you find carbon copies for all sorts of whacky stuff. It's just human nature, don't let it bother you or it will consume you.

Cheers
Nem

I find these situation very similar to the DJ Technology debate.

In Music production, people said electornic music i shit, because you are not playing an instrument by yourself, the computer is doing all the job.

In Djing', some people say you are not a DJ, if you use CDJ's or Ableton, because the software is mixing for you.

I think EDM & Technology, let the creativity of a mind to be real, without the need of a physical skill.

Technology it's just a Tool, in the end what will make a difference it's a creative mind.
