CDs

Is there an accepted brand of CD-R that is better than others? Or does it not matter? Are most blank CDs the same? Just asking this question because I was reading somewhere in DJ promotion someone saying that they stopped using Memorex CDs for burning mp3s because of problems with skipping.

Stick with the main brands (Maxell, Memorex, Sony, etc), and you shouldn;t have any problems..

I am a personal fan of Maxell.. Have always worked great for me.

Don't use cheap media. I suppose it's okay in a bind, but make sure the tracks actually play through without any issues.

Sort of on that issue, I've had CDs that play just fine in my CDJs but refuse to play in a (stock) car CD player.

If it's for Mixed CDS I'm giving away, than I use cheap media. If it's for burning tracks that I will play, than I use VERBATIM, or Memorex Black. Cheap media changes color and peels off after a while.

Use CD-R's Manufactured in Japan in comparison to Taiwan. If it's Manufactured in Japan the media is more than likely fabricated by the company Taiyo Yuden, whom are supposed to be the best when it comes to blank/recordable media.

Multiple companies such as Imation, Fujifilm, Maxell, ect. All buy the recordable media from Taiyo Yuden and then restamp with there own printing.

Right on the side of the spindle when you're purchasing the media, it should say where the CD-R's were made (near the barcode).

What cmay said, although I'll add that Khypermedia has been a really good brand for CD-Rs (and a good price too). The last spindle of CD-Rs that I bought were Office Depot brand, and they have worked flawlessly.

It never ceases to amaze me, the amount of people who buy 1000 blank CDR's from the local market for a fiver. Then can't believe their bad luck when on Saturday night the CD jumps right in the middle of that Gabriel & Dresden Remix that's rocking your crowd.

I'm a bit of a geek with this stuff, so here's the deal. It's not so much the brand of CDR, but the dye used. The best dye in the world is Taiyo Yuden. These guys make CDR's for a number of companies like Verbatim, Maxell, etc. So you need to do your research and get a CDR with the TY dye. Verbatim Pastels have said dye and work really well on CDJ's.
