REVIEW: Resident's Night @ Guvernment--Saturday January 27 2007
If I could summarize my experience last night in one word it'd be: WOW!!! The night was so good it definitely deserves a review thread.
So, let's start things from the beginning. As some of you may know (from my constant complaining haha) it appears that I will be unable to attend both A&B and B&J/Rank1 in February b/c of my mid-term exam schedule. With this in mind I have been a bit depressed and disappointed these last few weeks, i.e. knowing that I will not be going to see these amazing DJs while it seems like EVERY other person on TA will be isn't the greatest feeling haha. Anyways, yesterday evening I realized that last night was the perfect--and, essentially, the only--opportunity to party (I realized that b/c of the way things have worked out with school I could easily have taken Sunday (today) off without any consequence to my studies). So at that point I started to seriously consider whether I should hit up Guvernment; as soon as the mere suggestion arose Geli and Jessika were so surprised at my willingness to go out that it was only a matter of time before everything was figured out for one night of sick partying! I knew that last night was not a special event at Guv and that it would only be a regular, i.e. 'resident's night', Saturday---boy was I wrong about the 'only a resident's night' part! Though I was a little bit hesitant about whether I would enjoy the music I strongly felt that it was going to be a good night b/c of the ppl I would be parting with: Geli, Jessika, Derek, Yuri, Colton, and so on.
So Geli, Jess, and I arrived at Guv about 15mins after midnight: we entered through Gallery and I had my eye-drops confiscated! When we first got into Gallery I was thinking 'I don't know about this: the music is alright but it's nothing like my beloved trance'--so for the first hour or so I didn't do any dancing or anything: I just roamed around Guv--in and out of Gallery and Main Room--with Derek, Colton, and a few others. Between 1:30-2am is when the party started to kick my ass! The whole night leading up to our arrival I was worried about whether I would actually enjoy M.O.'s set, primarily b/c up until now I have not been a house fan and many of the TAs consistently report that the majority of his music on a typical Saturday is house. I could not have been more wrong about liking his set!! As soon as I 'figured out' so-to-speak how house music 'works' I immediately got into it. Since I've been into this scene I have been used to nothing but trance: huge build-ups, very energetic tracks, melodies, and so on. I had always felt that house was somehow too repetitive, not energetic enough, and just lacking something to make it sound really great to me. Last night changed all those feelings!
From about 1:30am-4am I spent the vast majority of my time in the Main Room. Mark Oliver's set was so hard it blew me away: I couldn't believe some of the stuff I was hearing. One of the best things about the house he spun last night (plus a few trance tracks here and there) was the constant booming base: it rocked my whole body, the bass never let up, and it didn't allow me to stop dancing--all day today I have had these crazy basslines in my head! Also, talk about build-ups! I realized how trance build-ups differ from house build-ups but this is not to say I didn't enjoy the latter: quite the contrary! I must have heard about 75 wikkid wikkid build-ups last night: ppl screaming, the strobe lights, hard hard hard stuff...it was just incredible. I couldn't resist: I got up on the podium/deck-thing on one of the sides of Main Room and just danced for at least a solid hour.
So that was 1:30-4am (or thereabouts). Around 4am I headed back into the Gallery. All night before we had arrived Geli and Jess kept telling me 'You have to hear Sydney Blu...she is amazing...she makes you wanna move like crazy' and so on. I admit I was skeptical: again simply b/c up until last night house wasn't my thing. Anyways, Sydney Blu impressed the shit out of me: I couldn't believe how good she was. There were so many awesome things about her performance last night, to name a few: a) it was awesome to be able dance within a few feet of her and watch her work her magic on the decks (it was the closest I've ever been to seeing a DJ spin at an event); b) she was so into her set! She was dancing, singing along, smiling at the crowd and so on; c) her music was so hard and dirty it was incredible...just track after track after track of music that made me want to destroy the ground with my feet...SO HARD!. When 6am rolled around and she finished up her set I hung back for a sec b/c I wanted to have a quick chat with her (and Sash I'm sorry dood: I don't mean to embarrass you with this little story haha). So I waited around until I could get a quick word in with her and this is what I told her: "I just wanted to mention to you that I am a good friend of Sasha's [to which she replied "Oh I love Sasha!"] and that he was actually the first person I ever met in this community. Anyways, earlier on today we were chatting on MSN and I said to him that I was considering going to Guv tonight but that I wasn't sure how great the night would be b/c it would be a resident's night. So Sasha said to me 'Nick, just go to the Gallery and see Sydney Blu, she is amazing'. And I can tell you that I'm not the biggest house fan but you fucken destroyed it tonight! It was so good and it was an honour meeting you". She replied by thanking me and saying what I told her was very sweet. After Syd's set ended we left the club and made the long, freezing-cold trek back to the car. Then we ended up wasting an entire hour getting lost but eventually we all got home safely. I had intended to be at home in bed by 5am or so: I hit the pillow around 8:30 this morning haha.
Alright so now that I've hammered out the details on the main points, I just want to mention a few things that made my night so great:
1) I met one of Geli's friends and I had a great time partying with him. We danced to Syd's set and we just both understood how sick she was.
2) This guy recognized me at one point during the night and said "Don't I know you from Labour of Love? Aren't you that Ukrainian guy?" haha. So I chilled with him on and off throughout the night and had a great time doing so. He also gave me a great light-show which I appreciated.
3) It was great to party with everybody I named above. It meant a lot to me (and I realize that part of it was just coincidence but part was also conscious effort) that the one night I decided I could party a great bunch of ppl made an effort to come out--especially Jess and Geli, I was really touched by how happy you two were when you found out I wanted to party last night! Geli made the best comment ever: "Nick coming to Guvernment? That's a special event in itself!" haha. And Jess thanks for everything: you basically went wherever I wanted to go and I appreciated it! And Colton, Yuri, Derek and so on: it was great partying with you guys again for sure...especially Colton, thanks for coming out to the middle of the floor with me dood!
4) I am so glad that I have experienced first-hand the fact that resident's night @ Guv can result in an amazingly good time. It was very refreshing. No less welcoming is my realization that I can thoroughly enjoy myself while listening to house. If last night is any indication of the typical sounds that one hears in the Gallery and Main Room when Syd Blu and M.O. spin then I will certainly not pass up the opportunity to go back and do it all over again (and Sash you and I will DEFINITELY party together to Sydney, no question about it!).
5) I ran into Shaya last night and he took a pic of Derek and I (Derek, again, I apologize for pushing you haha, my bad). I don't want to sound all mushy or whatever but Shaya recognized me right away and the first thing he said to me was "you don't have any exams any time soon?" and it meant a lot to me. I felt like he was genuinely happy that I was able to make it out. I'm looking forward to the pics bud. And thank you very much for the pass
So, all in all it was truly an incredible night: I thoroughly enjoyed myself and danced danced danced. It was a great experience. Thank you sincerely to everyone who helped make my night so wonderful. I really needed to do something like this since it doesn't look like I'll be partying at all until March or April.
I might as well end the review off the way it started: WOW!!!
