Running old games on XP?

So I'm trying to run a copy of an old RTS I got my hands on (Rival Realms) on Windows XP. At first it wouldn't even install, so I managed to get that working by running it in compatability mode. However if I try to play it in compatability mode the game won't run. My disk spins for a moment and nothing happens, though if I ctrl-alt-del and look in my process manager, I can see the game's process there. If I try to run it without compatability, the games starts to come up as normal, my screen goes black, and then a 'protection error' box comes up, though I can't read the actual error message because it won't let me alt-tab into it. It's a Windows 95/98 game, and the demo version of it ran perfectly, which I found kind of weird.

Any idea's on how to get this working? Not a huge deal, but it'd be cool to give it a spin for old times sake.

how about right-click the .exe and then (i think) go to the compatability tab and run it through win95 / win 98

Have you tried using ScummVM? It probably won't run it but it's worth a shot.

Yeah I tried that, it managed to get the game installed, but won't make it run.

I manged to get kings quest to work with the make compatible with 95/98 and dropping the screen res down to 800x600 with 16bit color.

(but now that I think about it... it was a DOS game)
