Israel bakery bomber kills 3

quote:
JERUSALEM (AP) -- A Palestinian suicide bomber attacked a bakery in the southern Israeli resort town of Eilat on Monday, killing three other people, police said. It was the first suicide attack in Israel in nine months and the first ever to hit Eilat, Israel's southernmost city.

Two Palestinian militant groups, Islamic Jihad and the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, claimed joint responsibility for the attack. A spokesman for Islamic Jihad, which has carried out dozens of suicide attacks, told The Associated Press that the attacker came from the West Bank, but gave no other details.

The bomber struck a small bakery in a residential neighborhood. Shattered glass was visible on the sidewalk outside, alongside bread trays scattered by the blast.

Benny Mazgini, 45, said he was in an apartment across the street when the building shook from the force of the blast.

When he ran outside, Mazgini said, he saw body parts scattered on the sidewalk outside the bakery.

"It was awful -- there was smoke, pieces of flesh all over the place," Mazgini said.

Police cordoned off the area, and Bruno Stein, Eilat's police commander, said the police believed there could be more bombers in the city.

"Our assumption is that it's not one bomber, and there might be more bombers in Eilat right now," Stein said. Israeli emergency services raised their alert level to the highest.

Police initially suspected the blast was either an accident or criminal incident.

The attack was the first suicide bombing to hit Eilat, which is distant from Israel's major population centers and has been largely insulated from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It also was the first suicide bombing in Israel since last April, when a bomber struck a Tel Aviv restaurant, killing 12 people.

Suicide bombings in Israel are sharply down from their height four years ago, when hundreds of Israelis were killed in dozens of attacks. However, a renewal of such violence could derail current efforts by the U.S., Israel and moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to renew long-stalled peace talks.

The Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, one of the groups claiming responsibility for Monday's attack, is linked to Abbas' Fatah Party. However, Fatah spokesman Ahmad Abdul Rahman condemned the violence, saying: "We are against any operation that targets civilians, Israelis or Palestinians."

There was no immediate reaction from Hamas, the radical group that now controls the Palestinian parliament and Cabinet. Hamas came under intense criticism last April for failing to condemn the Tel Aviv attack.

Eilat is located on the Red Sea near the Jordanian and Egyptian border, and al Qaeda operatives have been active in both neighboring countries. However, there was no indication the group was involved in Monday's attack.

The Israel-Egypt border, which runs near Eilat, is regularly crossed by smugglers entering Israel, according to police. Though the smugglers for the most part bring drugs and prostitutes into Israel, local officials in Eilat raised the possibility that the bomber had used the smuggling route to cross from Egypt.

In August 2005, a group thought to be linked to al Qaeda fired a rocket from Jordan at Eilat, causing no casualties. Al Qaeda also has carried out deadly attacks on hotels in Jordan and in Taba, just across the Egyptian border from Eilat.

Some Palestinian tourism agencies run tours to Eilat, providing another possible route for attackers to reach the city, a four-hour drive from the central cities of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

Suicide bomber kills 3 at Israeli bakery
From: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070129...el_explosion_12

By REVITAL LEVY-STEIN, Associated Press Writer 6 minutes ago

EILAT, Israel - A Palestinian suicide bomber attacked a bakery in this southern Israeli resort town on Monday, killing himself and three people, police said. It was the first suicide bombing in
Israel in nine months and the first ever to hit Eilat, Israel's southernmost city.

The morning attack struck Eilat, a normally tranquil Red Sea resort located at Israel's southern tip near the Jordanian and Egyptian borders. Separated from Israel's largest cities by hundreds of miles of desert, it has been largely immune from Israeli-Palestinian fighting and is a popular getaway for Israelis.

Israeli leaders said the bombing jeopardized a two-month truce in Gaza. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert vowed to continue the "ongoing and never-ending struggle against terrorists."

His defense minister, Amir Peretz, convened an emergency meeting of top security officials. "This is a grave incident, it's an escalation and we shall treat it as such," Peretz said.

A spokesman for Hamas, the radical Islamic group that controls the Palestinian parliament and Cabinet, praised the bombing as a "natural response" to Israeli policies — a position likely to complicate the group's efforts to end a crippling aid boycott imposed by the international community.

Two Palestinian militant groups, Islamic Jihad and the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, claimed joint responsibility for the attack.

Both groups said the bombing was meant to help bring an end to weeks of Palestinian infighting that has killed more than 60 people in the
Gaza Strip since December. Fighting continued across the Gaza Strip on Monday, and four people were killed officials said.

"The operation has a clear message to the Palestinian rivals. It is necessary to end the infighting and point the guns toward the occupation that has hurt the Palestinian people," a posting on the Islamic Jihad Web site said.

The group identified the bomber as Mohammed Saksak, 21, of Gaza City. Saksak's family said he had left their home three days ago and not returned.

Witnesses said the bomber stood out because he wore a long winter coat on a warm, sunny day when he struck the small bakery in a residential neighborhood. Police said the bomb was in a bag he was carrying rather than an explosives belt often used in past suicide attacks.

"I thought to myself, 'What's that idiot dressed like that for?' A couple of seconds later I heard a massive explosion," Benny Mazgini, 45, told Israel Radio.

Shattered glass, body parts and blood-splattered pastries were visible on the sidewalk outside, alongside bread trays scattered by the blast.

The attack was the second suicide bombing in Israel since Hamas won Palestinian parliamentary elections last January. The group came under criticism for making statements in support of a suicide bombing in a Tel Aviv restaurant shortly after it took power.

Fawzi Barhoum, a Hamas spokesman in Gaza, called Monday's attack a "natural response" to Israeli military policies in the
West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as its ongoing boycott of the Hamas-led Palestinian government. "So long as there is occupation, resistance is legitimate," he said.

He also said attacks on Israel were preferable to the recent bout of Palestinian infighting in Gaza between his group and the more moderate
Fatah Party of President Mahmoud Abbas. "The right thing is for Fatah weapons to be directed toward the occupation not toward Hamas," Barhoum said.

In the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya, a large crowd gathered outside the bomber's home to praise the attack. "Mohammed be happy. You will go directly to heaven," the crowd chanted, while children held pictures of the bomber. He looked pensive in one image, and held a machine gun in another.

In Washington, the White House condemned the violence and said it held the Hamas-led government accountable.

"Failure to act against terror will inevitably affect relations between that government and the international community and undermine the aspirations of the Palestinian people for a state of their own," the White House said.

It was the first suicide bombing in Israel since last April, when a bomber struck a Tel Aviv restaurant, killing 12 people.

Suicide bombings were at their height four years ago, when hundreds of Israelis were killed in dozens of attacks. A renewal of such violence could derail current efforts by the U.S., Israel and Abbas to renew peace talks.

The Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, one of the groups claiming responsibility for Monday's attack, is linked to Fatah. However, Fatah spokesman Ahmad Abdul Rahman condemned the violence, saying, "We are against any operation that targets civilians, Israelis or Palestinians."

Abu Hamzeh, an Islamic Jihad spokesman, said Saksak entered Israel from Jordan after seven months of preparation. He said the bomber was smuggled into Jordan — an allegation strongly denied by the Jordanian government spokesman, Nasser Judeh.

Islamic Jihad spokesmen declined to say how the bomber left Gaza, though Abu Hamzeh insisted it was not through Gaza's often-closed Rafah crossing into Egypt — Gazans' only gateway to the outside world.

If it is found Saksak did leave through Rafah, however, a delicate, U.S-brokered arrangement involving Palestinian security forces and European monitors could face additional trouble.

I guess Palestinians should just give up, give back all weapons, accept being second-class citizens, accept denial of independence, accept continuing Israeli military occupation, accept the right of Israelis to live on some lands where before 1948 about 700,000 Palestinians lived and since were forcedfully removed, accept no right for compensation for forced removal, unfounded murder of family members and/or friends, accept no compensation whatsoever, or inadequate one elsewhere, accept the ... oh, my the list just goes on and on and on. Well, yeah. Fuck resisting. I know for a fact that in 50 years Israel will set things right, including all these mentioned, according to Geneva conventions and such. Yeah.

In United States, peaceful demonstrations against Iraqi war numbering HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of people, including a large number of people in polls opposing the war ... what have they achieved? Did people's choices, opinions, votes count? Are they really represented? Is American government listening to its people?

And then some of you expect Israel PEACEFULLY to give all the rights, compensations, apologies to Palestinians. Yeah, right. Like someone's going to come up to you and give you money. You have to fight, you have to earn it. Sitting there in refugee camps is not going to give these suffering people their lands or homes back, they know that by now after 60 years of waiting.

Israel will never mend the damages done to the Palestinian people in full. To them it will be a huge defeat. So the only real option is fight. Or concede the defeat which will forever tarnish, damage the identity of Palestinian people. Freedom cannot be given, it must be earned.

No you idiot, they shouldn't give up wanting to be treated as equals.
But wanting to be treated as equal does not equal terrorism, so once again you prove how retarded you are.

How are they going to fight back? You mean, like throwing rock or spewinf bad words? Maybe attacking a heavily fortified Israeli military post with 50-year-old guns? You lack logic. For one hundredth time, Palestinians dont have tanks, dont have artillery, planes, GPS, scuds or even the money and proper equipment to fight back that Israelis have, not even talking about fighting at even terms, which is impossible in this case. They use what works best - hurting Israelis where its hurts the most. When Israelis bomb, kill innocent Palestinian civilians its called "accident" or "fighting for democracy". When Palestinian gunmen/bombers attack to fight Israeli aggression, its called terrorism. Bullshit. I mean, you expect Palestinians to shoot with Kalashnikovs at bullet-proof tanks to achieve freedom? Pfffft. Its called GUERILLA WARFARE. It has done wonders in the past. Israelis need to understand their dire situation and finally give Palestinians what they deserve before situation REALLY gets out of hand.

After what we Russians went through (and still going) in Chechniya, I find it hard to believe that you actually side with the crazy ones.

Just know that most of the Israeli Military consists of Russian Immigrants.

If you feel that what israel is doing is not fair, I am sure that the palestinians are open for 'freedom fighters' to come and join them in their struggles.

They had their chance in '48, '67, '73, '78, etc... And that is why they are throwing rocks and blowing themselve up, cuz they were not ment to control israel, just like hitler was not ment to control europe.

I'm sure that if the situation was reversed, and Jews were underarmed living in gaza and the west bank, and the pali's had israeli's army, they would just kill every last jew in israel and get praise from the entire arab world.
