Review: John Creamer & Behrouz @ Sonic
Before last night, I expected John Creamer to steal the show. I had seen Behrouz a number of times before, and even though I love his sets online, he's always been dissapointing any time I've seen him live. Quite the contrast to last night!
I arrived at the club at about 2:45 to Johnny White opening. I didn't get to hear much of his set, but it sounded like it was good. The club was pretty decently packed with an awesome crowd just like last week.
John Creamer started had a little bit of a late start at about 3:30. The first 3 or 4 tracks in his set were very promising, but he kind of lost focus after that. I found that although a lot of the tracks he played were really good, his set lacked diretion and flow. He played some older tunes, some bad and some good. I was really happy to hear Coburn - Give Me Your Love. That was a very nice surprise. For some unknown reason, Creamer kept turning down the music at strange times. Does he usually do this? He didn't even really mix his last 3 tracks. What was that about? lol
All in all, Creamer was a bit of a dissapointment. With how good that Hilo set was, and what people said about him when he was at Boa back in 2005, I thought that he wasn't on his A-game.
I wasn't too upset after Creamer's performance, because really I came to see Behrouz. I was really hoping to hear a good set from Behrouz so that I could finally see why so many people hold this guy in high regard, and boy did he ever deliver.
The best way to describe Behrouz is a cross between 2002-2003 Deep Dish and Danny Tenaglia. Quite a good cross if you ask me. His set was comprised of 2002-2003 Deep Dish style dark, groovey progressive with brooding baselines, and 8am bojangled Deep Dish bangers. Like Tenaglia, he played a few housey house tracks and a good dose of vocals over fierce basslines. And like Tenaglia, the programming of his set was very "compartmentalized", with several segments dedicated to distinct sounds. Except for a few lulls, Behrouz was pretty relentless the whole morning which was a stark contrast to the other times I've seen him and how boring he's been.
Although there were a good number of people enjoying Behrouz's set, I found the crowd pretty unresponsive to his sound. I don't know what was up, but the crowd was kind of stale in that department. That said, did anyone notice the crazy amount of good dancers in there last night? There were quite a few.
Tunes of the night are:
Coburn - Give me your Love (Creamer)
Pier Bucci - Hay Consuelo (Behrouz & Johnny White)
Some minimal remix of Strings of Life I've never heard before
A song that sounds simlar to Copyright - He Is, with the lyrics "Glory! Hallelujah! Let me show you the way." (Behrouz - one of his last tracks)-- ID anyone?
From mid-December to present day, Sonic has been better than it ever has been. The crowd this past week and last week has been exactly what I've always loved about that room, and what has been missing since in my opinion the summer of 2005. Standing on the dancefloor at the end of the night, with old-school Boa regulars (Daniel, Joe, Yvonne, Andy, Tristan) and new-school Sonic regulars (Karina, Miluska, Chris, Umar, Andrew) made me feel that sense of home that I used to feel at Boa, and that I've been missing since then. Whatever you guys have been doing recently, keep it up, because it's working!
