Trance fx

Where do most of you get your sound FX? Do you create your own or use sample CDs?

And what sample CDs would you recommend for your basic (white noise) sweeps, swooshes and swirls? I have a couple FX sample CDs, but most of the sounds on those are just so elaborate and complex that I have a very hard time fitting them in any song. They would probably work great for movies and games, but not music.

Your help is much appreciated. Thanks!

I think samples arent worth the hassle with positioning them correctly...you know they are never exactly 1 beat long or something...so it's easier to create your own...

it's really not that difficult to make your own ... most soft synths have a noise oscillator.

just bounce down a bar of white noise to audio then get looping, filtering and mangling it!

I'm after a particular effect and I'm not sure how to create this one. It does sound like it's white noise, but I'm not 100% positive. Maybe you can help me out.

Here's a sample, it's the best one I could find. The effect sounds like "pins or icicles dropping" - that's the only way I can describe it.

SOUND

Thanks!

If you have a BPM you can work out the length of any musicial interval (?). E.g. 140BPM is 1714.29 ms or 1.71429sec, so you can time compress/stretch samples to fit this length.

Try this calculator.

sounds like a reversed crash with chorus/flanger/phaser on top and maybe a high pass filter.

edit: I listened to it on my headphones (my speakers suck), and it has another synth playing with the rev crash, the following notes I think

Yeah it's just a straight reverse crash cymbal with a melody playing over it.

Yeah, I hear the reversed crash, but that melody sound is what I'm after. It's pitched, so it's not all white noise, but I do detect a hint of noise there, I just don't know what else makes up that sound. Some sort if digital wave? Maybe a sine wave with ring modulation? I think I've heard that preset somewhere, but I just can't remember where...

I'd say even those long samples you have, go ahead and cut/slice them up to fit your track if you want. Making your own isn't always convenient, but it gives you a lot of flexibility in how you want it to sound. Vengeance Effects cd is pretty damn good.
