Austrian Hoteliers Limit Number of Russian Guests

Austrian Hoteliers Limit Number of Russian Guests

The luxury ski resorts in Austria impose a quota on the number of guests from Russia, The Guardian reported Thursday.
Owners of four- and five-star hotels in the Austrian most prestigious Kitzbühel have reached a deal to limit the number of Russian visitors to no more than 10 percent.

Of 24 four-and five-star hotels of Kitzbühel, 14 sealed the agreement, Tyrolean tourism chief Renate Danier said, explaining they are the international resort and don’t want to become Russian by 50 percent.

Austrian Alps are favored by Roman Abramovich and Elena Baturina, the wife of Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov. But till the recent scandal with Mikhail Prokhorov, the better part of the rich Russians preferred the resorts in Courchevel.

The response to the quota decision of hoteliers is far from unanimous. The number of Russian tourists has been rising each year and big spending is their distinctive feature. The tricky point is that it usually goes together with partying hard, drunkenness and inadequate behavior that scares other tourists away.

Moreover, the Russians that are buying ski chalets and hotels at large in Kitzbühel fuel the prices for real estate there, pushing the locals out of the markets.

In a way I am glad that this pressure on Russian tourists is happening in Austria and France. It gives an excuse and great potential for our tourists to instead rest on the Black Sea / Caucasus instead, boosting the country's economy instead of filling comebody else's coffers abroad. Russian government right now is rebuilding resorts in Sochi, Krasnaya Polyana and other areas to attract Russian tourists which will be of greater benefit to Russia than spending money to the benefit of some other state, who are increasingly becoming ignorant of the source of their tourist revenue. We'll see how Austria will feel when Russian tourists stop coming there and choose to ski in Caucasus instead ;-)

Sochi is a joke comparing to the French or Austrian resorts, full with Caucasus mafia.

I am sure Austria won't miss Russian Tourists. Kind of like the Boycott French Fries Crap here in the states. Or when the Muslim's wanted to boycot the Dutch for the cartoon.... There is always someone else that will pick up the slack and nothing will come of it but less Russians.

Well, as the guy who knows a bit of London's tourist business I can tell you, they might miss them.

Most of the Russian tourists are very rich (oil&gas rubles) and theese guys really like to spend alot. They think it somehow makes their name in the local society.

The reason why Austrian clerks do that, is because when a lot of rich Russians are gathered together, they're starting to do really nasty things. They have a natural belief of their greatnest, and they are keen to show it to everybody around. They can't just quitely enjoy their holidays, like most of other people does. Sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's the only thing why other people like Russians so much.

Austria Denies Imposing Quota on Guests from Russia

The tourist office of Austrian embassy in Moscow has denied information about imposing the quota on Russian tourists in Kitzbuhel, RIA Novosti reported.
“We are preparing an official contradiction to the information appeared in the media. It is a lie,” said Anna Sergeeva from the tourist office of Austrian embassy.

It was Renate Danier, the outgoing tourist chief of Kitzbuhel, that spoke of introducing the quota on Russians in that ski resort of Austria. But Danier will vacate the office in a few months. “We think such high-flown statement relates to it.”

“What has caused such statements, we cannot say, as it is contrary to the logic of our work. We try our best to attract as many tourists to Austria as possible rather than make barriers,” Sergeeva specified.

Hoteliers in the luxury ski resort of Austria, Kitzbuhel, reached the deal to limit the number of Russian visitors to 10 percent of the total number of guests at any one time, The Guardian reported February 8.

Interesting point, though I have a different analogy. Let's say there is a 1000 people who visit a certain store. Russians make up lets say 100 of these people. Surely this will have an impact. Its not like there's a big line for resorts in Austria. If it was serious competition, then it will make sense.

Why is this news again?

Obviously a business decision...
