Anyone thinking of upgrading?

I've still got a single-core machine, so when I upgrade it'll probably be to a quad.

Personally I think that quad-core is a huge gimmick for the typical user, but media production is probably one of the few areas where it would actually be useful, assuming that the software is properly multithreaded.

I just scored a pair of pre-release Clovertowns (2.4GHz, but only 1066MHz FSB). I have to work out what I'm going to do with them in terms of ram, mobo, power supply etc.

Should be fun..

i kinda agree with that. For production, it seems like it could work wonders having 4 cores...i'm drooling over all the memory and stuff that could go on at once on a 4-core system. For the typical PC user, it may not be something necessary.

Especially when there are still few softwares that even truly supports dual-core yet!!! Although the OS support multiple core, you dont truly benefit unless the app is specifically written to pass off threads to multiple cpu's!

What are the prices of the quad core btw?
Are they expensive by far than Dual Core?

$1200 beans easy for the CHIP plus you’ll need an Intel 775 Series motherboard ($200-$300) for the moment
Plus Dual Cores are actually 2 duplicated cores amalgamated into one cpu they both compete for the same i/o bus. Now what they have done is in essence is double that (2 amalgameted cores X2 ). Now all 4 cores use the same i/o bus and compete for the same shared memory!

I really don’t think this will benefit the Computer musician until the software and more so plugin (vst) technology is written to accommodate the new processors. So don’t think for a second that if I have 4 VST’s hogs running that each will run on its own cpu! Lol

For the money, a true musician could buy 2 have decent hardware synth’s and not have to worry on precious cpu power!

I don't know what DAW you're using, but cubase and nuendo utilize 4 cores without any problem.. So you get benefits right now..
Just check the banchmarks HERE to see the benefits of quad core in nuendo/cubase.. Right now I can't bring my duall core conroe to anything over 60% the way i work... and a quad core gives twice that power roughly..

True. I've got a dual dual core xeon machine, and most of the time, Nuendo maxes out when the machine is at +90%. Should be said though that sometimes it maxes out when the machine is at around 50%, so I guess it depends on what plugins you use, routing or something else. Haven't really figured that out yet

The Cubase SX manual specifically states it supports multiple CPU cores and says in theory it can support an unlimited ammount of CPU's so the skys the limit with Cubase!

Cant wait to upgrade from my hyperthread P4 3Ghz
