Has it to be Core 2 duo

Hey guys
I really need your help. Since I read the about the Core 2 duo in here im waiting to upgrade my PC, but the problem is since that time its not released yet in here, where i live and when I asked they told me maybe about 650$ for the lowest one
So im stuck here for 5 month now and i wanna upgrade, so hast it to be core 2 duo or the dual core (Pentium 4 EE or D) is enough for the future or I will have troubles maybe in 1 or 2 years
Will this extra cash save me in the future or there aint a a big difference
Thanks guys

IF your computer you got now is within a 2 year lifespan, I would keep it and wait a little while for the successor of the Core Duo. Even if you don't buy that, the price of the Core Duo will go down as it becomes an older generation.

It really depends on what you're upgrading from and what you intend to do. Could you elaborate on those two?

You really don't _need_ a core2duo. It just happens to be one of the better bang for the buck deals on the market for most right now, especially for those willing to go into the overclocking thing. If a core2duo is over your budget there are still plenty of alternatives. Maybe your money is even better spent on a good amount of memory and a good soundcard.

I for one have a constant craving for upgrading my hardware and hell it's hard to admit sometimes, but great songs were made long before the core2duo ;-)

I've got an Athlon 64 3200+ (2 GHz) so I'm in pretty much the same boat you are, but I do fine.

I think if you've got those specs, you're better off investing in a bit of audio hardware. Make sure you've got a good audio interface, and if you like to pile on the effects, think about getting a DSP (I've got a "legacy" Powercore that I bought used).

If you do a lot of sampling, maybe another gig of RAM as well. Make sure you've got good-quality dual-channel memory as that can make some difference as well.

I wouldn't bother upgrading at this point, especially with the prices you posted above - the improvement would be by such a narrow margin that essentially you'd just be throwing away your money.
