When I make a beat on fruity loops or whatever, it just doesn't sound the same as drums that professional people make (obviously). I'm pretty sure if I use the right effects it would sound a lot better.... but what are the "right effects"?

Well, I misread your post initially and I thought you were trying to make your percussion sound like a human drummer, but I'm going to go ahead and submit the post anyways since I took the time to write it out, heh.


A few additional tips for "humanizing" your percussion:

Add dynamics. Not every sample should hit at the same volume. Don't make one cold, even loop and use it throughout your track. A drummer doesn't necessarily hit his drum the same exact way every single time, so try to simulate that.

Add variation. If you play a loop for a bar or two and it repeats throughout the song, even with the occasional fill, it's going to be fairly obvious that is what you are doing.

Add imperfections. Maybe make some of your drum hits slightly off rhythm. If you're using FL, turn off grid snapping and barely move some of your hits off center.

Sound advice as always. Or at the very least make your drum loops longer say about 8 bars then the repetition becomes less noticable. But also remember that in trance sometimes less is more.

You can also sidechain your hi hats and stuff to give the track more drive.
