Renter Rebate...
Ok, so from Aug 2005-Aug 2006, I lived with my ex-bf. He still lives in our old place but now sublets to his friend. He just recieved his renter's rebate which you get after being on the lease for a full calendar year. It's a pretty big chunk of change: $1,000. When we lived together, he had a job about 50% of the time, and I helped him out immensely by paying both of our rent for a few months (in which he paid me back for after I moved out).
In Aug 2006, I moved out because:
A. I did not want to renew our lease.
B. We were breaking up for actions on his part.
C. My parents do not think highly of him and gave me an ultimatum: move out or we're not paying your college tuition.
Because I was on the lease 8 months out of the calendar year (2006), I am not entitled to filing for a rebate...even though I was on the lease for over a year. That's the legality of it, and even though it's pretty dumb, there's nothing I can do about it. However, because of my ex's monetary troubles, I DO NOT believe he would have been able to live there by himself had I never moved in (seeing as I had to put down a lot of money at least twice to get ourselves out of being evicted).
I expressed concern to him about how it would be "nice" to see a bit of the money (something like $100). He flipped out, saying that in now way am I entitled to that money in the least. He has, once again, dug himself into a hole with the landlord, after he quit his job 3 months ago and did not have steady income until just barely getting a job a few weeks ago. So, he owes them a lot of money, in which he used the entire renter's rebate to pay them backrent.
I know that legally, there's nothing I can do...but if the roles were reversed, I would slip him some cash, especially if he had helped me get it in the first place.
What do you guys think? Am I entitled to a small amount of the rebate?
