CRYPTDLL.DLL not found

Just tried to boot up a laptop and it says that the CRYPTDLL.DLL application can not be found, which obviously means that windows cannot boot. Is there a way to fix this without having to use the windows repair disc?

Safe mode also requires the cryptdll.dll.

i don't know if this will work at the DOS area, but try the 'sfc' command.

It Scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Using WinXP cd to boot from CD-ROM then go into recovery console.

I must have been entering the sfc command wrong then, because I was entering it whilst in the recovery console and it didn't seem to be recognising it. What exactly is the command? LeopoldStotch?

did you try and run 'sfc /scannow' from 'Start -> Run'?

If that isn't working, try 'c:\windows\system32\sfc.exe /scannow'. I don't know whether Windows can recall its PATH variable (enabling you to run programs from the system32 folder without entering the full path) when running in safe mode.

Or just browse to that folder and double-click the application. It might work, haven't tested it here (don't really want to jeopardize the PC's here at work).

Like I said, I couldn't get into Windows full stop. I've fixed this now, I just ran the recovery disc. But I would like to know how to run the 'sfc' command from DOS for future reference.

Time for me to go back to English comprehension class, I think..

Does this help:

http://www.computerhope.com/sfc.htm

?

It seems you can't directly boot to DOS from Windows XP, as it isn't built 'on top' of DOS like 98 and ME were. Only thing you can do is make a bootable MS-DOS floppy disk (insert disk, right-click floppy drive in 'My Computer', select Format and tick the bootable option).

EDIT: It IS possible to make your system dual-boot WinXP and DOS, see

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1008756318

for an instruction. Haven't tried that myself, though. It would provide a solution, might the problem ever occur again.

Thanks mate. I could have sworn I'd entered the sfc command as shown on that link, but obviously not.
