Equalizing kicks in Reason...

I am currently messing about on Reason trying to equalize a kick I got from a sample pack and this is what the Equalizer looks like now...

(the top equalizer)

I've heard that for a good kick the waveform has to look a certain shape and if this is true has anyone got any links for processing kicks in Reason ONLY, not in any other program.

Regards,
James.

showing us a pic will do little...it's more about the sound not the parameters.

Whether you are processing a sound in reason or another program, you might not be using the exact same tools, but you are doing the same things. Each program has it's own flavour for sure, but if you want to EQ a kick you will be going through roughly the same process on any platform.

OK then, I won't ask anymore questions in future if you're going to be like that...

It has nothing to do with you, but the question itself. We can't answer the question as it's worded so we have chosen to give other suggestions that will help you formulate a new question-

Perhaps post a sample of the kick on its own and in the song your making? As everyone has said the picture is meaningless with us hearing the sound.

Hey James!

Well from my point of view, that kick eq doesnt look ok, but its hard to tell without listening.

Eq a kick in reason isnt any different, and many kicks doesnt need that much of eq. I personally try to tweak my kicks with a mixure of eq and some good compression to get it tight and hard, but thats just how I want it to sound. But if you want a more softer and warm kick, i would spend more time on the eq with a light compression.

As you can see this could go on forever, but its works almost the same way on any software or hardware, you just have to learn Your gear!

Cheers
C

Hi James,

Tight, surgical cuts are only really useful if you're correcting a problem, so unless the sound has actual resonant peaks at ~1 and ~2 kHz, remove these and keep the bandwidths wide and the nodes to a minimum. I also question your 30 Hz lowcut, which may be taking out more than you need, while low-shelving everything below ~150 Hz doesn't sound like a good idea either, unless the level of bass is genuinely too high. Try to combine the two surgical cuts at ~1 and ~2 kHz if you find the midrange too loud, but, again, don't cut by as much as 18 dB unless you're fixing a problem. As for the high-shelf, it's unlikely you'll want to raise anything above ~10 kHz on a kick. Rather I would lowpass it off, but since you don't have that option available you could use a high-shelf cut if it helps take out any unwanted noise/hiss, but keep the Q tight so you don't drag the lower frequencies down.

And remember, EQ should be used to fix a problem, not just for the sake of it or to give the waveform a certain shape.

Hope this puts you on the right track.

Atlantis-Ar. i found that 30Hz lowcut, gives it more bass. hows is that?

also RSX. ive had troubles getting the kick to stand out in my mixes and someone on here suggested doubling the kicks, like two of the same at once. im also kinda new to mixing and mastering so i dont know if you wanna take my word, but i have liked the effect.

good luck

Not more bass, just different bass

As for layering kicks, I usually use at least 3 or 4 different kick samples (and maybe some synth kicks) to get a final kick I like.
