The DJM-400 doesn't have a booth output. As long as you never plan on using the mixer out anywhere, that shouldn't matter.

The DJM-800 has a rotary option, if that's your thing.

The DJM-800 also has digital inputs/outputs, which you don't get with the DJM-400.

For $400-$450, the DJM-400 seems to have quite a bit on it though.

I use only two channels (for now) but I love my 800.

I love the colour effects, particularly the sweep and filter. It's a fully digital mixer too, and I suspect that the quality of the sound is better than on the 400.

It's just a kick arse mixer.

The sound quality's probably about the same tbh - as they brought them out at the same time I wouldn't be surprised if they used loads of the same components in both so that they can buy in bigger bulk.

Feature-wise you're basically comparing the sound color effects (sweep, filter, crush, harmonic) of the 800 with the sampler and ability to jump straight between time base for the effects (1, 1/2, 1/4 beat etc) on the 400...

That's what you have to decide based on the previous info. By the sound of it, it doesn't sound worth it to upgrade in your case.

If you only need 2 channels and want the best of both the 400 and 800, then consider the 909. 50 effects, touchscreen control, better crossfader than both the 400 and 800 with fully adjustable and independent curves, cut in lag control, crossfader tension control, booth outputs, XLR outputs, effects send/return (not like you'd need an external effects box with the 909). I'd take a 909 over an 800 any day.

btw, is there a point in buying an effects unit if i have those effects in my mixer?

Not really, unless you want super-high quality effects like on the EFX-1000 or are a James Zabiela wannabe, but if you only use them minimally..it's not worth it. The DJM 400 should have all the basic effects you need.. Echo, Flanger, Phaser, Filter, Delay etc.

I'm running 2 x cdj200's and a djm400. If you just want to simply mix then the 400 will do the job. Sound quality is excellent and it's a solid mixer. If you have the spare coin though, i'm sure the 800 wouldn't disappoint either. Effects on the 400 aren't anything overly exciting but they are alright to mess with.
