deEssers are really for vocal tracks, they take the siblance out of the vocals (i.e. the hard "s" sounds)

yea de-essers are mostly used on vocals. a de-esser is a compressor that works in the high frequencies to de-ess (d'oh) the vocals S-sounds, which mostly lies around 6-7 kHz, are often very distinct in vocal recordings, thus you want to lower them to make the digital audio easy on the ears.

Technically, it just compresses the amplitude of sibilants, so "thhh" is left at the volume it's always at. It's not a very loud sound as far as human mouth sounds go.

I have noticed alot of volcalist's "sytles" emphasize the "ssssss"
I guess an Esser would be used in this case? lol

They probably forgot to turn on the DeEsser on their channel strip. Or something. Or maybe they like hissy vocals.

I dunno.

Royksopp - Remind Me (James Zabiela's Ingeborg Mix)

example of well used hissy vocals...

using de-essers is depending on the nature of the track, sometimes you'll just want to keep them hissy or even enhance that "hissy-ness"
