Effects and Midi on the mixer or effect from comp using MIDI

I'm sure thats about as clear as mud.

I'm going to buy a laptop in the next year or so (probably sooner considering how much of a tech junkie I am) and my question is this.

Effects with the onboard mixer

OR

Use midi and ableton on the laptop (I'm making the assumption that this is a viable option).

Thanks, I looked for something to this effect but I could really find it.

Have you thought about getting an effects unit? For example the Pioneer efx-500/1000 or Korg Kaoss Pad...

djm 400 has efx
xone 32 has efx
aren't those both under 600?

Sorry If I misstated my question, and if you have a suggestion of price let me know.

Just watched this:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=QVIsF2VwK_g

I'm super impressed that you can transfer samples to the other channel and all the fx are super nice.

Does anyone know where I can find something similar, a demonstration, of the xone 32. I would like the option of incorporating my computer at some point and having the third channel would be great for that.

Or does anyone own a 32 who could verify the abilities that it has?

I love my DJM 400. I've got it synced to my computer with Torq even with only 2 channels.

The Xone:32 doesn't have effects, it has a filter.

I'm not sure what you plan on doing with regards to the MIDI side of things, but from what I gather you're going to basically run Ableton as a send/return on a 3rd channel to incorporate the effects into your mixes. You can do it this way, although all the effect parameters and triggering will have to be done in Ableton itself, and you would use the channel fader on the mixer as basically a wet/dry fader.

Of course there are mixers that incorporate MIDI, but I'm guessing they might be out of your $600 budget.

I was looking at the nuo4 if I wanted to go with the midi. That thing is well priced for what it can do as far as I can tell.

Can someone explain the difference between what the DJM 400 does and the Xone 32?

edit: My other thought is that if I get a good mixer with filters or efx as a next step for my setup, then maybe down the road I could pick up a 2d for midi control (or something like it).

Allen & Heath XONE 32 =
Cons: No Effects Unit, No BPM Counter, Only -26dB Cut on all three frequency bands, Price is slightly higher.

Pros: Durable (Heard the xone series are built like tanks, I however don't own one), 3 Channels, VCF Filters, 4 Outputs = Main (TRS), Booth (TRS), AUX (TRS), Record (RCA), Arguably better sound quality.

Pioneer DJM400 =
Cons: Only 2 Channels, only 2 Outputs = Master 1(RCA) & Master 2(RCA), May not be as durable as Xone Mixer, sound quality may not be as good on Pioneer.

Pros: Slightly More affordable, Effects, BPM Counter, Full Kills on all 3 Frequency Bands, Baby brother to Industry standard mixer (DJM800), Digital Mixer gives added benefit to working with CD Decks.

Just a quick summary of both mixers, this is highly debateable on both mixers on which one is 'better'. More the question is, 'What's better for you?'

If the Nuo 4 comes into the equation too, then I'd definately get that.

I thought the sound quality of the djm400 is at its best?
