Thumbs down REVIEW (finally): Tiësto @ Mansion (Mar. 25)

In short: No Magik.

This was one of those events that are more about the social scene than the music You can tell when the VIP guy at the door is shouting that you can get a table for $3000 and there is a constant stream of a certain type of clientele happy to pay that much (or should I say that little?)!

Anyway, the club gradually fills up during Fedde Le Grand's opening set. While the guy can mix, what he plays is unbearably boring My legs move only to avert cramps, while my ears haven't been so tortured since... I'll have to get back to you on that

Tiësto finally makes his entrance around 01:00 (after some guy had set up the mixer/headphones/etc for him ). As soon as he takes over, what looks like a sea of people rush from backstage to show off at the front: Hello Sveta! Hello Jes & Jay! As well as many others who I assume are only local celebrities

I think that he spent most of the first hour or two with tracks from his "Elements of Life" album and some current tunes from others. Pretty good start Unfortunately, after that he goes into some strange new style (couldn't tell you what most of those tracks were), that quickly turns into non-melodic hard trance (Traffic, Flight 643, and the likes)

He doesn't look too comfortable with his mixing, but it's OK, apart from the lack of key matching most of the time (which I have to admit I now find annoying). Basically no crowd interaction, but he does fake it when the big camera is on him and later signs a few mementos.

Shortly before 05:00, he ends with "Touch Me." By that time, I'm so bored/tired that I can't wait to go catch my flight back home and don't even stay one minute into the track

So... very disappointing after his amazing show there a year earlier (though it was on a Sunday--apparently the only day of the week when he excels ). At least this year we can't blame it on Jes for singing live while not sober

Goes to show you that sometimes the best things in life are free In retrospect, the Cafeteria was the better choice for trance that night! Next year I'll just go with Andy Moor vs anyone else, since we have the same musical sensibility

I would have to disagree because "Elements of Life" is a really strong album! "In The Dark" will be one of the top tunes of 2007, with "Everything" not far behind

But as a live DJ, he seemed to be pushing for a new unique sound that wasn't as good

Tiesto jumped the shark quite sometime ago. Between putting out horribly produced mixtapes and artist albums so cheesy it would make Kraft jealous. Tiesto is just to into being "Tiesto" the Pop Enertainer instead of DJ "TIESTO" the DJ. although his sound is always evolving, which i cant say for djs like AVB and ferry, but conversely its not evolving for the better. sets are nebulously thrown together with a complete lack of direction and are incessantly littered with Tiestos greatest, and not-so-greatest hits and inane remixes of those errrr hits(when was Love Comes Again ever a hit?). i cant remember the last time i saw a tiesto tracklist that looked banging from beginning to end since his amsterdam set of late 2005. it always seems like every tour he does now is for his newest shitty album release party. whats he on now ISOS 8, triple disc compilation? well artistic integrity and set quality went out the window a long time ago so whats another shit album to add to the list. keep up the good work tijs, if you keep going at this rate you will have completely aleinated every fan that you had before 2002. cheers mate.

first it was oakenfold. now its tiesto. and some could argue pvd. next its armin. honestly, i believe that all the worlds "best" djs will at some point follow this pattern.

this is why one has to listen to what he likes and not what everyone else is ranting and raving about.

that pattern they follow is called more money, waaaay more money, and in our world it always wins. but Neil had some good points! either way once a marketing giant and you become friends the tables go from being a dj and producing music u like, to this isn't gonna last forever so why don't we all get as rich as possible while doing it and do what makes the most, i mean its not like tiesto is like my shit sucks but i make more than any other dj in the world, so im a sellout, no! hes like i don't give a fuck, I'm rich bitch ( a lil dave chappelle there)

truthfully it ain't a bad gig, hell i think many people say what they will now, if approached would sell out, the negative connotation of the word sell out does not supersede the literal form of SELL, in which makes these guys rich

anyhow its good for the scene, without the notorious trance all-stars making all the money, the shit we see now in dance music probably would not have become possible, amd now some house dj's can demand alot of money, Morillo being the most analogous, so rock on tijs! anyhow all exposure of dance music that people spend money on is a good thing, because once theres no money it goes right back to shitty raves and clubbing in a rattletrap with speakers on sticks.

and i def touched him @ his setai party during wmc, and i know that some of would love to have done that...lol

Rzo makes some real valid points, most of us would probably do the same if in their shoes. the tiesto machine is pretty big now, and they obviously have the formula down pat, so i guess any deviation from that formula could mean a loss of dollars, and the tiesto machine has a lot of mouths to feed. But if i was a dj, i cant imagine doing a set in any other fashion but to rock the crowds socks off. most of tiesto's sets these days are geared to attract hordes of mindless noobs, play myriads of insipid tracks from a new album or to build on the "tiesto brand". im sure he does throw down a massive set or two a year(out of like 150gigs) that is worthy of praise, but there was a time when that was a regularity. the one thing that really chapped my ass is his clear lack of alegiance. LP and the Space Crew put down the red carpet every time his ass came to town for nearly four years, and played an integral part of his intial exposure and SUCCESS in North America, only for him to about face and take his circus act to mansion. alot of this had to do with the whole Global Gatherings, Ultra Fest battle of a year ago, but i think Tiesto really tanked his reputation here in Miami with that bogus move. oh well, it is what it is.

Anyone who went to this party instead of Armada Night got what they deserved, completely fucked over. But they only have themselves to blame.

Just compare the reviews.

Tiesto had his day, and he will definitely play good again and anyone there on such a night will be lucky. But because those nights are so few and far between it is not worth it to risk it.

And to claim that Tiesto HAS TO sell out in order to make money, or make his marketing people happy, or because of his marketing people, or because he is so big, is a fuckin joke and weak ass excuse. Are you seriously claiming that if he plays good he will not have any fans, lose money, lose marketing opportunites, end up working at McDonalds, etc. Well that is complete Bullshit. In fact the opposite is true. Because he has money, because he has status, he can tell any marketing person to fuck off and play whatever he wants to play. He hardly needs to be marketed or promoted, they need him not vice versa. Come on you know who can fire who in that business relationship.

Between 2000 and 2003 is when Tiesto was ripping the best sets around, and making everyone happy. And that is when his fanbase grew to extremes and his price per gig went through the roof as well. So history tells another story completely. He plays what he wants to play, not what anyone else makes him play. And right now it's shit, and it's on him, period.

And yes what he did to LP & Space may have been wrong in some people's opinions. But how many people has Space and LP done wrong. It's called Karma, and it evens shit out. And do not fool yourselves, LP & Space could have him if they really wanted him.
