bit torrent config question

ok i'm hoping this doesn't go agaisnt the forum rules as i'm not discussing anything illegal

anyway, i'm having trouble getting bit torrent to work WITHOUT a router.
so i'm directly plugged into the modem, shouldn't it work without any configing? i know how to set it up when i'm behind a router(here @ work we have no router lol)

thanks.

Do you have broadband internet? If so your modem is a router and is probably not set up for port forwarding.

http://portforward.com/ should help

alternitavely google your router model number and bittorrent and you'll find suggestions on making both work together.

By default I believe most routers need the ports opened for BT to function properly.

And also make sure you use something else as 6881 which is the default port and go in a range upwards of 10000+

use utorrent

not bit torrent

i dono if you have to port forward though the modem also ... i think so though ... just find the isp of the modem and do the same as a router

*not at all sure about this answer though*

correct. have you tried a new port in your torrentng software settings(making sure the port is not reserved for any of the 10million pieces of software out there, google: "list of ports")?

also, if its work, isn't it kinda risky to run any torrent software on their terminals, for your and their professional sake?

The most probably reason it isnt working at home is that:

A: you have a firewall blocking the required port
perhaps turn off windows foirewall (XP) or any other software firewall you have on the PC.

B: Like the other members have said, you "modem" is in fact a router and the required ports have not been opened YET.

Try this and post result here

Click on Start
Click on Run
Type in CMD
Press OK
In the black screen type in ipconfig
Press ENTER or Return on keyboard
Post the result of the line which says "IP Address = . . .

I would advise against turning off your firewall if you don't have a router in between you and the Internet. It's okay to turn off your firewall (behind a router) for short periods of time, but is not recommended.

Make sure your client has the appropriate permissions in the firewall. Configure ports manually if you have to, although it is a bit strange that broadband modem + router works, but broadband modem by itself doesn't. Like previous posts, check the modem configuration (do a traceroute to some external IP and check the the first 2 or 3 hops for a web server (since most networking devices have a web interface) (http://ip_address).
