hey guys, i've had 2 cdj1000mk3's and a djm 800 for about 6 months now. i am kinda bored with the effects on the djm 800 and was thinking about geting a efx1000. i think if i could layer the effects of the two i would be more satisfied and not as bored when mixing. i dont do anything fancy, but when playing a 9 or 10 min trance track i tend to get bored w/ the djm800's onboard effects. i am very subtle w/ my effects so i dont want to give anyone the impression that i'm an effects junkie like james z.

i have ableton live 6 but no interface to connect it to my mixer. i am kind of on the fence because midi mapping and all of that computer stuff is too complicated for me.

i was just wondering if anyone has been in the same situation as me and what they did about it. have you added a efx to your setup and been pleased? or do you just think i should bite the bullet, buy an interface for ableton, and learn how to integrate it in my mixing?

I would vote 'interface' for Ableton, though I'm not entirley sure what you mean....do you meen an audio interface so you can pre-cue? Or are you looking to use the MIDI capabilities of the DJM 800?

While I've never used an EFX1000 and im sure its neat and all, the Fx on the DJM800 are pretty outstanding, and due to the high price of an EFX1000, I can't see it as a worthy purchase especially if your not really big on FX.

Think about it, would you rather shed out big bucks on a unit you use sparingly? Or take the time and cash to learn the groundbreaking Abelton Live technology and learn to make your sets way more interesting not to mention the tons of great FX in Ableton as well as VST plug ins~

My vote is to bite the bullet, and learn something new and I gaurentee your DJ'ing and knowledge of DJ technology will be expanded rather than playing with some FX.

great post. you should really try atleast mastering combinging color and beat effects simultaneously before the need to buy an efx unit. additionally for trance, more effects aren't going to help as its basically the same effects we have on the 800 (just being able to layer them). does that really merit a $800 purchase? also, i can see how you would want to try some JZ skills every once and a while but if your spinning trance what's the point? FX usage is more geared towards house and techno. ableton is great for its own purposes however I don't think you should dish out upwards of $400 just to route effects in it (although its definately worht buying in general). what exactly are you aiming for? perhaps with a little more information we could suggest something...i feel like you were never quite happy with your djm800 purchase from the beginning lol but that just might be my impression.

yeah, you're right... i guess i'm just trying to take things to the next level. i spin hip hop 3x a wk, but at home i'm constantly working on my edm mixing. i have beatmatching and phrase matching down. i have been spending a lot of time working on my harmonic mixing (most of the time i spend is organizing my tracks, keying them, etc). i'm sure there are some equing tricks i need to learn but i'm comfortable w/ equing. i guess ableton would be the next logical step. i've messed around w/ it but need to connect it to my djm and/or a midi keyboard/controller in order to use it to its fullest. i know you've reccomended the sapphire le to connect the djm and ableton in the past. as for the djm.. i'm happy w/ it but, just a little bored.

mastering using the color and beat effects together? i dont know if i'm missing something, but can you give me some examples of how you're combinding them? i use them together. i thought it was cut and dry (simple). what steps could i take to master using them toghether?

it's just an idea if you're a bit bored with the effects. be sure to be able to manipulate combinations of color and beat effects at the same time. as an example, some time I'll drop a 1/2 beat roll while sharply applying a filter (to around the 5 oclock postion on the color knob) right before a new phrase which gets people's attention after a big build up. that's just an example, in reality being able to control the different effects independantly but simultaneously will really liven up your sets when effects are appropriate and perhaps cure your boredom
