Interesting Punishment

BARTOW, Fla. - A judge has ordered a man who pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide to display a large picture of the victim in his home after serving two years in prison.

Circuit Judge Robert Doyel said Friday that the picture must be at least 2 feet wide and displayed prominently. It also must include lettering that says: 'I'm sorry I killed you.'

Arthur Pierce, 31, was racing with his cousin on a busy street when they caused an accident that killed 17-year-old Chelsi Gregory, authorities said. Witnesses told police Pierce was swerving in traffic at about 120 mph when his Cadillac collided with a pickup in which Gregory was a passenger.

A prosecutor also said alcohol was a factor in the crash. Pierce's cousin, Christopher Pierce, is set to be sentenced April 5.

An advocate for Mothers Against Drunk Driving requested the photograph be part of Pierce's sentence, according to The Ledger of Lakeland newspaper.

The judge said that Pierce's probation officer will be allowed to search his home at any time, and if the photograph is not displayed, it will be considered a probation violation.

hmm...it is quite interesting..

I definitely know that I wouldn't want that picture to be displayed in my house. Having a picture of the kid you killed being permanently displayed would screw me up for the rest of my life...

Its a cool idea but wouldent that have serious mental reprecusions. Id imagine that could lead to depression or even suicide. Accepting responsibility for things we've done is one thing, but that seems to far.

I think it would be more logical to have the offender display the picture in his cell for the 2 years he is in prison, if in fact the judge thought the picture to be a good addition to jail time. If the judge thought there was cause for further punishment than 2 years in jail, he should have sentenced him to more time.

But think about this - surely vehicular manslaughter with DUI connotations would result in a 8-10 year sentence which would have far more mental repercussions than a 2 year sentence and the rest of the time spent with a reminder of what he has done.

I think it is a great idea. Saves the government $100k per year for someone they don't have to lock up too.

On that note its all depending on the person and the placement, if he wants im sure theres a 'prominent' location on his wall somewhere in his house that he wont often look, wheras being in prison your reminded every day. Additionally if he doesnt regret his situation or feel a large ammount of guilt then it will have zero effect.

I think its a good sentence because, the pic of that person will haunt Arthur Pierce for the term of his sentence.

Its something he cant ignore.... its always going to be there on the wall.
