Genre clarification

Im relatively new to the EDM scene. I just got into it beginning of last summer. I've mostly been listening to trance but I've been downloading different live sets from different DJ's of different genres.

Recently I downloaded a Carl Cox set. I've heard he was techno but when I listened to it, it seemed so much like trance. The kickbeats, etc

Can anyone clarify me the differences?
Also what is minimal? and Jungle?

google it, moron, and even with us telling you, only after you listen to it enough you will be able to tell the diference. AND am i the only person that thinks this garbage with styles is degradating to the edm scene in general. OIK we know there are differences but do we constantly have to be spilling out crap like, "oh trance is the best," or "i like that certain dj when he played this type of music", why cant we simply say good or bad even though we have different opinions. Yes styles of edm are necessary for labeling, but do we have to put this much enphasis on it???

with any good dj you can't really pin him/her down to a genre. good djs always make genres into the identity of the dj.

carl cox doesn't play anything but carl cox music

which is pretty much straight up banging fast techno, but also tech house, tribal, and even a bit of trance, though in the sense of trance, not the "a state of" variety - and not techno in the richie hawtin sense, not in the minimal sense.

minimal (short for minimal techno, not related to minimalism of steve reich, etc) is an ideological music created by subtraction and not addition. a lot of music like commercial trance is basically conceived of as adding layers and effects until the whole thing is one white noise with a hard kick. minimal essentially sets out to deconstruct the construction of music by stripping it of excess and leaving only what is elemental of the music. it was championed by richie hawtin/plastikman, and became so sort of pinned down that it became almost a style. Now I have to question the ideological basis for minimal techno, since I think it has changed into a fashion. It still retains the sort of punk sensibility of rebelling against the grandosity of electro house and commercial trance however

jungle is an urban form electronic dance music which has roots in the dub and ragga music of jamaica, oldschool hip hop, and classic breakbeat hardcore/rave music of early 90s england. Check out Shut Up And Dance - 10 To Get In, then SL2 - On a Ragga Trip, for an idea of breakbeat hardcore which eventually melded into what we call jungle, then Goldie - Terminator, and tracks by LTJ Bukem and Grooverider for some early jungle sounds. Jungle is characterized by obviously the breakbeat, sampled in the manner of hiphop but cut up frenetically and probably at a somewhat higher tempo. the bassline is crucial, and like classic breakbeat hardcore, there was often an MC laying down some kind of drug induced jibberish over the track, a lot of times this was done in a reggae/ragga style with early jungle tracks. over time the essential elements of the tracks gave rise to a new name 'drum and bass', and those elements have continued to be the defining and dynamic musical elements of any track that takes the genre's name.

Why would carl cox be limited to one genre? PVD makes both house and trance. in fact there really is no clear definition of trance or house so you can call it what you want.
