Just finished my first Paulo Coelho novel - "The Alchemist". I have to say that i felt it to be one of the most powerful and amazingly constructed pieces of literature I have ever read. The messages and thoughts that it illustrates are relatively simple in their concepts, however the way they are constructed and intertwined into the story of Santiago the Shepherd are nothing short of amazing.
I find this anecdote about the book particularly amusing and ironic -
In China & Australia it has gained particular success. The Herald Sun listed it as one of the five most commonly stolen books from Melbourne's book shops.
Has anyone else here read this book and what are your thoughts on it?

read it ages ago, really enjoyed it, also read the valkeries by him which is absolute shit
then i read Siddhartha by Herman Hesse who is the 1946 nobel prize winning Laureate in literature, and i couldnt help noting that Paulo Coelho had pretty muched copied all the themes from this earlier and far superior book. Coincidentally i had a conversation on the similarities between Siddhartha and The Alchemist with a german (last night!) whos met Paulo Coelho, he didnt agree that it was ¨copied¨ but did think the Alchemist was inspired by Siddhartha.
