layering

when people talk about layering or layering techniques, what does it mean? example 'i layered 5 different bass sounds, playing 5 different basslines' i just thought it was playing stuff at the same time in the playlist - surely he didnt play 5 different basslines on top of each other??! that would sound muddled?? what exactly is it?

You know what layering means. Sure things can get muddy if the layers aren't processed properly. In case of basslines, you usually give each it's own space in the frequency spectrum. One has the frequencies below 80Hz and the other has the frequencies above (for example).

Btw. the track in my sig has two basslines (high&low).

The point isn't to "get out of your body", it's to bring awareness to your consciousness while you're experiencing another reality.

It's all about subtlety aswell. Sometimes you struggle to hear something specific, yet you know it's there and if you silence it you can hear a noticeable dip in atmosphere.

Get Voxengo SPAN. It's free off their website. It's a spectrum analyser and will help you learn what frequency everything is in.
