I never had the disc read error problem, but all my ps2 does it make a loud grinding noise.

How bout cleaning the disc before throwing it away?

For unreadable discs, this has worked for me in the past:

Get some white toothpaste with baking soda...run warm water over the bottom of the disc, then start making lots of small concentric circles with your finger using a drop of toothpaste. Do it about 2 minutes straight over the bottom of the disc (like waxing a car), then rinse it off with warm water and wipe dry with a soft cloth.

Try the game again. If it still doesn't work, turn the PS2 on it's side or upside down, and give it one more shot.

Guess you should say "Oopsie" then. It was probably just a slightly scratched disc.

Don't give up on the PS2 yet. It has hundreds of kickass games for hella cheap. Go get one of these beauties.
New slim silver model...more reliable than the old ones, and oh so sexy.
