A frenulum (or frenum, plural: frenula or frena, from the Latin frēnulum, "little bridle", the diminutive of frēnum ) is a small fold of tissue that secures or restricts the motion of a mobile organ in the body. A short frenulum may require a frenectomy or frenuloplasty to achieve normal mobility.

A frenectomy can be performed to remove the frenulum from the penis. The frenulum may be cut when a male is circumcised. This may also reduce the size of the frenular delta. The frenulum was cut in 26.7%, 20%, and 33.33% of circumcised patients[1][2]. The frenulum is often cut to relieve frenulum breve or frenular chordee during circumcision[3].

Such modifications run the gamut from single to multiple piercings, small decorative marks to complete tattooing, urethral relocation, and, in males, subincision or even complete bisection.
