I'm going to get one of these soon (pretty soon)

do you need to have a certain type of mixer in order to use it, and what cables should i be looking for?

i'd really appreciate help!

thanks!

Depends how you want to use it... it'll 'work' with any mixer, however unless your mixer has a designated send & return loop, you might well be limited to only applying it to the master channel (i.e. any effects will be applied to all of the sound playing) - with some mixers (like the Xones) you can set things up using aux sends, it's not quite quite ideal but you can do a lot more than you might be able to otherwise.

What mixer have you got? If you tell me what you've got I can suggest the best way to hook it up to make the most of it and what limitations there might be.

And the cables will depend on the mixer, but you can't really go wrong with 2x mono 1/4" jack to 2x RCA (phono) plugs, cos the EFX has got both RCA and jack inputs so if you use jack outs on your mixer then you use the RCA inputs on the EFX and if you need to use RCA outs on your mixer then you can use the jack ins on the EFX. Of course you'll need 2 of these cables (one for send, one for return)

Alright, ehm, could someone please guide in getting the right mixer for the efx-500?

and, if you can, something that's somewhat for the 'budget' dj. if not, throw any ideas around.

Thanks.

Yeah, all you'd be able to do with that is connect the EFX between the mixer output and your speakers and use it to apply effects to all of the sound at once.

If you really want to get the most out of it, I'd look at either following a Vestax VMC185XL or Ecler NUO2, in the bottom end of the price range.

Prices seem to vary a bit, in the UK the Vestax is the more expensive of those (£280) but in the US it seems to be the cheapest ($250).

The NUO2 has only got 2 channels, so I suppose it depends if you're willing to lose a channel from what you've already got.

But you can definitely use it and have a play around with it with your current mixer - might be an idea if you're not too sure about splashing out too much at once to get the EFX, start having a play with it and when you've got a good idea of what you want to do with it look into getting another mixer then?

Unless I'm totally confused by your post, I think you're a little confused on your currency conversions there.

$250 = £124.86
£280 = $560.65

No, he's probably right. We pay £110 for Sony 7605's while you pay $99.

Wait, wait. I'm totally confused and even proved his post with my previous one. You'll have to excuse me, I just recently woke up.

Nope, my numbers are right - we do indeed pay twice the price for a VMC185XL that you guys do. Well, only by current exchange rates... As my housemate pointed out to me the other day, you can only really say that something's expensive if its price is out of proportion with other things bought/sold in the same country - everything's expensive over here, but then I gather we technically earn 'more' (by current exchange rates) for the same kinda level of job, so relative to how much you earn it's pretty much the same - it's actually fortunate for us that our currency then has a much greater value if we convert it to dollars at the moment (like if we were to buy something online from the States).
