I know there are some folks on these boards who work in various insurance industries and companies. I was wondering if any of you would be kind enough to offer me some help in terms of advice about how to go about finding an entry-level position with an insurance company (what are the typical requirements, education, what one should highlight on the resume, do you know of any available positions, and so on). I have experience working in the warranty department of a large computer-manufacturing company for over year-and-a-half (as a contractor employee only); my education is a four-year BA degree.
Thank you

Typically, either a BA/BS or a college diploma in insurance will be seen as a minimum requirement for underwriting, claims, risk management positions. Sales experience is usually a minimum for brokers/agents. If you want to get an advantage on other entry level job-seekers then I recommend you start taking courses toward a Chartered Insurance Professional designation (through the insurance institute ). You'll want to play up customer service experience and analytical skills.
I'm in a position to hire; however, we have no entry level positions available right now. If you like, you can PM me your resume and I'll have a look at it for you, perhaps give you some advise on what you can do to maximise it's effectiveness on others in a similar position to myself.

Hi, thank you very much to both Moral Hazard and Tordan for your offer of advice. MH, I'll forward you my resume tomorrow if that's okay, I am still in the process of editing it - I haven't updated it in many months. Tordan, I've checked your link and will probably try to apply to some postings. Thanks a lot again

For the most part people don't choose a career in insurance...especially adjusting. Its one of those careers that you get into because you know somebody in the business. My father was an adjuster and I always said I would never get into adjusting. When they offered me a summer job as a junior adjuster I thought this would be a good way to make money for when I was away at university. Then they offered my a part time job in our Thunder Bay office while I was at university. Before I was even finished school I was offered a job.....how could I say no....no looking for a job after school...how much luckier could one be. 14 years later I am still with the same company WTF
