Sneaker Pimp Torq While Recording

I was wondering how I can set it up so that I can use Torq and record my set with an M Audio Fast Track Pro. When I talked to M audio tech support they said it was not possible to use both because each one is using the sound card. I wasnt confident that this was fully correct so now im here looking for help. What can I do to run both at the same time on my Macbook?

Thanks

Well, I use Torq and when I record, I just plug the master out from the mixer into the line in on my computer. Would you not just be able to plug into the line in on the ext soundcard?

Also, the tech guy might be talking about recording from within Torq. I record using Audacity, an external program that runs in the background.

Maybe it's just that I've never used a high quality ext soundcard, but I think I get excellent quality in my setup with or without Torq. I'd give it a shot. Make sure you download the LAME mp3 encoder with it so you can export mp3s and WAVs of your completed recordings.

It's crystal depending on your internal soundcard

When you bought Torq and installed the Connectiv drivers, essentially your computer is using Connectiv as its own sound card. You'll notice that when you play something off Itunes, it will play throught the left channel that you have Connectiv running on.

Unless you've fiddled with the preferences and changed all that!!

But anyway, if you take an RCA to mini cable (headphone plug whatever...not 1\4inch), and run it from your record out or booth (for more volume control) into your Input port on your computer, then run Audacity or Audition what have you, as long as you have a decent computer the quality will be perfect!

My only gripe is there is a wee bit of feedback that can be heard when nothing is playing or when a track gets really really quiet. Not too big a deal though

Hope that helps

Get a 6 dollar ground loop isolator from Radio Shack and all the feedback will be gone. It really does work.

This i'm sure works but lets go into a short computer lesson.

Having two programs open at once causes the following issues for your computer and its processor.

Ram -> Cpu = slow
Cache -> Cpu = fast enough

If your processor is running two applications, because of the opperating system overhead attached to each process (in todays operating systems this is considerable) you are going to have a much higher cache miss rate than if you were recording directly from torq (assuming this is possible). This means its heading back to shared memory on your slow ass system bus (the second largest bottle neck in computing next to hard drive I/O) to get what it needs before it can process it.

Granted I'm sure this happens alot even when you are just running Torq but it will happen much more when you're using two programs.

My recommendation is that if you can, record through torq.

No I hear ya it makes sense. So far, Audacity has worked out fine for me though. I guess it's all in the cpu specs.

Thanks for everyones Help. I am now able to return the M Audio Interface I have and put that cash to some new monitors. Anyway I got it working using audicity, and now just have to play around to figure out how it works properly. Is there any settings or preferences I should set before I get going? I want to be able to replay the set as an mp3 or wav.

Thanks again

That's only for recording if you are using Torq in internal mode (ie, no timecode control or external mixer).

If you are using connectiv, yes you can run a separate program and record off of your other M-Audio soundcard. I do it all the time with my M-Audio firewire audiophile.

I wish M-Audio had put another input on the connectiv for this...

I stand corrected, though I find myself wondering why the hell they wouldn't let you record using the vinyl...

Can you do this with SSL or TS?
