Ok this is where I'm going to cut you all off. I have (almost) every Paul Oakenfold mix. Yes his mixes are usually slower than say a DJ Tiesto or Armin Van Buuren Mix but this mix strays from the Oakey that I know.
I watched an interview on 1groove.com where Dr. Trance (Don Berns, a Toronto Trance DJ[I could also swear the voice for TSN commercial spots for many years]). Oakenfold said in his inverview and this is not a quote but a paraphrase along the lines of "I have conqured Europe and now my goal is to conqure North America."
Now if you look at the tracklist and his use of tracks (like the tracks from The Dead Can Dance and sound tracks like Bladerunner) you slowly come to realize that this was his move. I have Tranceport and GU's from New York and Oslo and yes they are slower, more chill out trance, BUT they are not "Another World". Another world seems to be a ploy to move towards a commercially viable North American trance set. A set that is still commercial enough to get put on centre stage at an HMV but trancy enough that Oakey lovers will still buy it.
Though I cannot say that his mix is terrible, it is definately not "Tranceport". His mixes that just drop in The Dead can Dance tracks and the shameless plugs of "Are you going to see Oakenfold" really get annoying. I mean yes TDCD is cool but damn man...put it in it's place...start the set, end the set, or chill the set out in the middle with it...but don't drop it in so damned often! I mean I'm no world class DJ but I do believe that Oakey's intentions were more towards the commercial and saleability aspect with this album, rather than the music end of it, which is has been so wonderful at mastering.
I saw him live at Connected V3 (Toronto, Ontario, Canada March '00) and I must say that Dave Ralph set him up wonderfully and then when Oakey came on the crowd went nuts. But his set was solid...moving and definately danceable. No cheezy TDCD tracks here. If he would have pulled that S*%( on stage the crowd (of 8,000 or so watching at that time) probably would have boo'ed him off. I mean there is no place for it.
In any case I've ranted enough. Maybe you all think I'm on crack after writing this but this is just my opinion, after having given Oakey's latest endevour a fair chance.
