Distortion when recording set!

I just finished recording a set and at certain parts in it are a bit distorted. I figure it can be one of a few problems such as maybe having the gain too high, shitty quality track, or the bass can just be to high. But there is distortion with bass in a couple tracks and I was wondering if it is possible to edit that out somehow and with what instead of figuring out what the problem is and re-recording the entire thing again. Thanks

AFAIK you can't really edit distortion out of a pre-recorded mix.

Unless you just chop that section out carefully making sure that you keep your phrases intact - but I would just re-record the mix TBH.

What are you using to record?

level control is your friend

no, you're screwed, you'll have to re-record or deal with the distortion

set your record levels so you have some good headroom for the odd peak

normalize it later

Have alook and set your pcs line-in Record vol to max and adjust levels on your mixer till it records good or it will go fucked if your pc is on half-way and your levels on your mixer are maxed.

normalize is on EG Sound forge (Process option- normalize)

say the start of the track is at 100DB and your distorted bit is at 160DB you can normalize it to 100DB but if you recorded it distorted then it stays distorted.

is it from the speaker getting distorted or is the set distorted?

That's strange cause on my old setup (when I used to use the PC's line in), I used to have to have the PC line in on minimum and the gains on my mixer fairly low and was just about peaking without any distortion. If I was to raise the line in only slightly, it would distort straight away.
