Cedric Gervais
Space Miami Resident

As most of us were popping pimples and starting puberty, Cedric Gervais was behind a set of turntables, playing to thousands of clubbers. At the age we were struggling to get our drivers license he was a resident at one of Paris’ top clubs. While the rest of us were chasing girls, laboring to get through school, or trying to sneak into clubs Cedric was already inside of them, busy becoming one of the top DJs in the world. Seems impressive, but I guess when you’re studying masters of the trade like Carl Cox and Laurent Garnier while the rest of the kids are studying math and science those kind of things aren’t too big of a deal.

From these not so humble beginnings Cedric has carved himself a spot in the world of House Music that stretches from the South of France to South Beach. He has also taken the step into production, working with a wide variety of amazing artists while showing off his own formidable talents as well. With headlining spots around the world, as well as his own legendary residencies, Cedric has made a name for himself that will soon be on the lips of clubbers the world over.

His first gig was a 3,000 person rave in the South of France at 15 years old. A residency at Queen in Paris followed shortly thereafter and eventually he landed in Miami at the world-renowned Crobar where he became the hottest thing in South Beach. Cedric’s reign over the stylish and beautiful crowds on Washington Avenue lasted four years and spread down the road to Nikki Beach where his Indio Locco party put the recently opened outdoor/indoor club squarely on the map. In 2004 he moved downtown to his current home, the world famous Space in Miami. During his residency at Space he has played alongside the most famous DJs in the world on the main floor every Saturday night including Deep Dish, Roger Sanchez, and Sander Kleinenberg. Every Sunday morning at Space, he heads to the Terrace at 5 AM for his own special sets that last well into the afternoon.

On the production tip Cedric has worked with all the top electronic talents and labels you can think of, from Peter Rauhoufer to Dirty Vegas to Second Sun as well as some giants in the world of rock. Along with sometime production partner Dallas Austin they created distinct sounds for Duran Duran’s Want You More while also remixing the track for the classic New Wavers. Even Lenny Kravitz clocked his skills and asked Cedric to remix two of his songs, Believe In Me and Stillness of the Heart while listening to him play in Miami.

His original productions have been just as noteworthy; his first release Burning on Ultra Records made a huge mark and lead the top label to request a two-album deal. His debut artist album on the way is, Experiment due this fall. The first single, Spirit In My Life released in April is already a staple in the sets of Erick Morillo, Seb Fontaine, Deep Dish and loads of other major DJs. In addition to his album, he had a hand in one of the biggest tracks of the 2006 WMC with his remix he did with Second Sun of Queen’s Another One Bites The Dust.

This summer’s will take him to Ibiza, London, across America, and around the world. His residency at Space will continue as well, providing a home for Cedric and his diehard fans. Without a doubt Cedric Gervais has already achieved more than most top DJs could ever even hope for, but his reign is just beginning and he is sure to make even more noise with his music before long.

Experiment will be released October 2006 on Ultra Records

Cedric Gervais Interview
By: Zach Davis

Space resident and leading man in Miami Cedric Gervais is rocking dance floors around the world and turning out club-pounding tracks with the likes of Second Sun and Sharam. With a new artist album released on Ultra Records and various other compilations and single releases on the way, Cedric is a man on the move. Recently, Cedric had a few minutes to sit down with me at the Bang! Music festival in Miami and let me ask him a few questions.

Zak Davis: How long ago did you move to South Beach from France?
Cedric Gervais: I moved to the US 12 years ago, straight to South Beach.

ZD: Was it a difficult transition, coming over here to the US?
Cedric Gervais: It was, because I did not speak a word of English. The first 2 years were very difficult.

ZD: How is the club scene different in South Beach versus Europe? What is the same?
Cedric Gervais: Europe is more advanced in house than the US, but the Latin influence in South Beach gives the party a sexier vibe and makes it have a different flavor.

ZD: When did you start producing tracks? When did you start DJing?
Cedric Gervais: When I moved to Miami 10 years ago, I began producing tracks that were terrible. After about three years of learning how to write songs, I started to collaborate with people here. As far as DJing, I started in Central Bay in The South of France when i was fifteen years old. My father was a DJ and owned a club there. During that summer, he hosted a Queen Club party and some of the people from the club were there. They asked me to come up to Paris to play and after the gig, they offered me a residency there. I was sixteen by that time.

ZD: What was your involvement with Deep Dish and the song "Party All the Time"?
Cedric Gervais: Its funny; it started with a goofy video I did with Second Sun. Sharam (from Deep Dish) got it and thought it was hysterical. Even Paul Van Dyk saw it and thought it was funny. After seeing it, they asked Second Sun and I to do a remake from the ground floor.

ZD: In what style are you producing and DJing these days?
Cedric Gervais: Electro house and progressive house, anything that is hot and sexy and on the cutting edge.

ZD: How has your experience with club Space been?
Cedric Gervais: Its amazing, it really has given me a boost in my career.

ZD: How is the writing process different for you when you are solo versus writing with someone else? For example Second Sun?
Cedric Gervais: It is a team effort; I will have a writer, someone to create the melody, and an engineer. I work with the people that I enjoy spending time with. It is much more fun and exciting with a group, the more influences in a session make for a better track. I have found that working by myself is really boring.

ZD: Does it hold special meaning to be playing in front of Daft Punk today at Bang!?
Cedric Gervais: Honestly, it's scary (chuckles). Actually, I am honored, they have been a big influence on my career. I grew up with them and Laurent Garnier, so being able to have the opening set for them is wonderful.

ZD: It seems that you are at the top of your game right now. Where do you see Cedric Gervais headed?
Cedric Gervais: I am going to keep working hard on both DJing and producing. I'm doing a compilation on Yoshitoshi that will be out by the Winter Music Conference, and I'm touring for the new CD, Experiment. I have recently been signed to Bullit bookings and I foresee a lot of new places and new people in the future.

ZD: Why Miami?
Cedric Gervais: I was with a friend in Central Bay and said "come with me, come check it out." I came here and I stayed here. I am never going back to France; I am now a Miami resident for life.

WORLD PARTY / WET GROOVES ARE THIEVES

I have to say that anyone who supports the World Party, Wet Grooves, or any of their affiliations are contributing to thieves. Over WMC 2007, they paid almost none of the talent at the 5 or more events they produced in Miami. Those of you who paid their overpriced tickets were contributing to their pocketbooks and most of the amazing talent never got paid. This is being taken to court and I wanted to make everyone aware of this. They also do events in Dallas and also trying to do them in San Francisco. If you love the music, please support legit promoters who pay their talent and don't make excuses.

BOTTOM LINE IS THEY DO OK PARTIES, BUT THE TALENT ARE NEVER PAID. SAD PEOPLE WHO ARE DESTROYING THE SCENE. THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE THE BALLS TO CONTACT BACK AND MAKE EXCUSES. OK, I AM DONE WITH MY TANGENT.

PEACE.
