Arranging tracks in Ableton and other questions...

Hey guys. I've been messing around with Ableton for the past few weeks and I've got warping all figured out (finally!). The next step for me is to arrange the tracks to actually make a mix. The VINKALMANN warping guide was a great help with warping. I was curious to see if there was some guide out there for track arrangement, or if you guys had any tips when trying to align tracks properly, assuming they're all warped well.

Another question while I'm at it:

I've got my UC 33 midi controller all set up. So how does one actually go about using it as a 3 band eq in Ableton like a real mixer? Basically, where are the eq controls (or do I have to dload a vst, for example, that emulates eqs? that I can then map my controller to?

I've looked through the Ableton forums but, to be honest, it's all a bit overwhelming for a n00b like me.

Spawn, I know you do "hybrid" mixing between Ableton and CDJs. I'd like to do the same thing, but through Torq and cdjs. Maybe you can help on that.

Hopefully you Ableton pros can help me out!

Re: Arranging tracks in Ableton and other questions...

sorry to be anal but it must be said: RTFM.
if youve paid ~$500 why wouldnt you read the manual before starting out?

ok with that said...basically you have two options: session view vs. arrangement view.

Doing live sets your going to want to use the session view (which is how i do my hybrid sets which have become somewhat redundant now that i have 4 CDJs). with a djm800 you can sync ableton to the 800's internal midi clock in order to match tempo's (although slight adjustment's must be made). I think i'll make a guide for this soon as i get quite a few PM's about this all the time.

if your warping is spot on you need only worry about the phrasing of tracks in order to facilitate the creative aspect of mixing. in the arrangement view (used for compilations, production, "designer-mixes" and the like) i would rely on lining up via the waveform and not by the timeline as certain tracks may have whole phrases that are shorter than usual. Always check your mixes by simply hitting play

When you read the manual you'll find all kinds of information about ableton's built in plugins and vst's such as the shite EQ3 and the amazing and popular EQ8 (which can be set up to model the djm800's EQ or even a xone 92's EQ or anything youd like). mapping your midi controllers' hardware features to any of ableton's plugins or your own vst's is as easy as mapping to any other controls in ableotn.

have you checked out http://www.abletonlivedj.com yet?

It's a great resource for beginners and they are a very friendly community. A lot of TA's there as well.

cheers

The manual I know! I'm slowly making my way through it, but you've cleared a lot up for me. Thanks for the post. I appreciate it.

this might help if you get annoyed with your knobs having to be at 4 o clock for the eq to be -/+0db
