[Gabber]For me in 1998 I heard the bassline from a Thunderdome cd in the back of a 1988 cimarron cadillac. From there the bassline is what captivated me. I'd never heard anything like that before and I wanted more. Sure enough the US did not carry this sound as it originated from Europe/ID&Ts parties. I was so into this style I made a bootleg shirt from the Cover of Thunderdome XXII released in 1998.
[Schranz]/[Hard Trance]This sound could only carry me to newer heights where found Tunnel Trance Force sets online. This type of EDM kept the fast movement but had lighter uplifting sound compared to Thunderdome which could be referred to as gabber.
Next I Started downloading stuff off stuff like napster and other programs like dc++. Before everything became illegal. This is where I downloaded just about anything. From 666, DJ Sakin & Friends, Antiloop. This is also when I found out about Pete Tong's Essential Mixes of large names like PvD, Paul Oakenfold. . . This is also the time where I started downloading sets from the Ministry of Sound. . .Tiesto!!! Most of this stuff wasn't for sale in the US at the time. This was like late 90's early 2000ish. Also found out about Board of Canda around this time.
Notable Mention for being an influence 2000-1989 Mixes
Also some where in 2000ish a girl named Amanda gave me a tape that she recorded off the radio from club Roxy in Houston. This is where I was introduced to tracks like Miss Jane - It's A Fine Day and some others I cannot remember right off hand.
I did not have turntables but my friend did. So I went into HOT Topic and looked at their vinyl. Sure enough there was a Kontor Classics 01 with Miss Jane - It's a Fine day (ATB Remix), Paul Van Dyk - Columbia EP, and a few more different styles that were not EDM in nature but along the lines of hip hop. Oh and yes I bought my records at HOT TOPIC!!
Worth Mentioning: Benny Benassi, Marco V, Art of Trance,Guardians Of The Earth / Dream Traveler - Starchildren / My Ascension(One of the first release for vocalist Jes Brieden who also did As The Rush Comes), Darren Tate - Prayer For A God, There is way more than this, I cannot list everything
After the random downloading I kept doing that until 2003-04 when people were getting busted and fined thousands if not 10's of thousands of dollars for sharing. I took what I had at the time and thought to myself I'm going to buy the music I really enjoy. So the first track that came to mind was Sasha - Wavy Gravy (Original).
I went on ebay searched it up and sure enough found Sasha - Wavy Gravy, but here is the kicker the person selling the vinly was in my home town. I was like wtf. So I wrote him saying i'd buy the vinly record. Sure enough in doing so I spent months chilling with him listening to old music/new music (EDM) I was pretty random at the time. IF I liked what I heard I bought it up. . . I'd come home with 25 records at a time, and maybe 50 more just to listen to on my own. Then I would go back and visit purchasing only the tracks I enjoyed listening to, giving him very few back. Then repeat the process for almost 5 months.
From there I practiced mixing the same records still to this day. I've not ventured out much into buying music. In 2005 I did buy a few tracks at the time: Whirlpool - Under The Sun, Perry O'neil - Reworks EP, and a few others.
There is so much more to list on here of what I like and how i've progressed through the music. Here is a: Tracklist of my mixing in early 2007 of the records I bought a while back
Past that the taste for me as of 2007 is shifting into what I believe is a mature sound. Moving into an ethnic progressive feel. I think that is because a lot of the track I bought from my buddy back in the day were progressive in nature to begin with.
Now i'll leave you off with where i'm looking forward to in the realm of EDM:
Best track of 2007 that i've found so far for my current taste is:
Massivedrum feat. Danny - Fingerprint (Balearic Groove Mix) [Magnetica]
If you want to hear the track check out the website: http://www.magnarecordings.com/ <-- sweet record label based out of Portugal.
