Moving to Australia???

Ok this might not be the best place to ask but here it goes anyway.

I graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. I currently live in CANADA. I would like to entertain the idea of moving to Australia for a year or so. I don't know where exactly yet, but i know it would be somewhere in the South-East..anywhere from Adelaide to Melbourne to Sydney but along the coast.

How is the electrical engineering industry in this region? What website would be the best to search for jobs? Is there maybe a website or something I could checkout jobs that are for people from outside the country?? Also what is the cost of living, how much is it to rent a 1 bedroom apartment or a house??Any other info that you guys could give me would be very helpful.

Thank You,
Robert

I could answer many of your job related questions since I've researched this option myself. But I'll let the Aussies do the talking.

hi robert,
im sure you will be able to get a job in australia, it may be getting the work permit that will be your only hurdle.
But in saying that if your degree/experience is recognised with the australian standards, you should be able to obtain a permit easily, either by being sponsored by an employee or a by opting to get a skilled migrant permit. link to visa's

I just done a quick search for a job and this is what came up:

Your job search found 290 Jobs matching "electrical engineering" in Melbourne, VIC.

So, im sure you will have the option to be a little picky and choice the right job in any state
heres some job search sites

my career

As for the cost of living, if you choose to live in the heart of the city you will be paying top $$$ move out a few suburbs and the prices will come down, i know we have a few auta's who work in real estate and they may be able to help you more with this subject

*Begin Melbourne vs. Sydney flame war here*

Perhaps consider Perth in Western Australia for a job. There is so much money going around that place, with the resources boom and all. Same goes with Brisbane.

If you can hook up a job with a mining company in either of these cities you'll be laughing all the way to the bank. Plus they're awsome cities to live in (although Perth is 2000km away from anything.. but it's still a kick arse city with heaps of chicks)

It's personally subjective really and that's all you'll get, I treat such opinions for what they're worth, not very much.

Best bet is to have the employer deal with the paperwork rather than just landing off the plane and trying to make a go of it yourself, if you're well qualified, experienced and have a proven track record it'll basically look after itself and you will barely have to do any of the really hard work.

alot of the elec eng jobs are in remote areas on mining sites. they pay very well.

there is a few city jobs, mostly in power and distribution but the competition is fierce with most, if not all, grads applying for these positions.

and please do yourself a favour and dont move to adelaide. melb or syd only

The mining jobs pay well and some have conditions like...you work 1 week and they fly you back home for a week off.

Rob, stay in Canada. As a fellow engineer I can say there is more work there (I'm actually moving back there shorlty) As a Canadian you won't enjoy certain social aspects of Australian life either.

haha Walter....it's depresseing being back isn't it

Rob, happy to help a fellow Hrvat!
You want a lively community, definitley go for Melbourne.
I know quite a few Canadians who were glad they made the move to Melbourne, rather than Sydney for many reasons.
