so ive had what i believe to be a great idea i just dont know if its worth the effort. thats what i need you guys for...

basically im about to buy a .pdf copy of an instructors solutions manual for a college algebra book. the thing is going to cost me like $30, which sucks. the actual printed copy they sell to the instructors costs like $80 online off of amazon. the .pdf solutions manual i buy for my engineering classes cost me like $5, so i never care about dishing out the cash and then sharing it with my study partners for free. but its a bit different for this college algebra one since its fucking $30.

so what i was thinking of was buying it, burning it onto numerous cdrs, then going to class and selling them for $5 a pop to anyone that wants one in class. i was gonna make a little roundtrip to all the college algebra classes and just tell everyone right before the professor arrives. lets hope i dont get caught either.

now itd be a little time consuming and maybe not worth it, but i see the possibility of success. i mean i know if i was in a class and someone offered me the entire instructors solutions manual id jump on it in a second. and most people probably dont even know where to find such a thing in the first place.

theoretically i could continue to do this every semester until they change the book edition too.

so should i do it?

if you buy a $30 CD, and make copies and sell them to other people for $5, would that sound ok to you too?

im not buying a cd. im buying the already illegal .pdf copy of the instructors solutions manual. then burning that onto cds and then selling those.

now if i bought the solutions manual, scaned every page, and then sold it, then it wouldnt be okay. but since someone has already done all the work, why not make a couple bucks off it? thats what the person is doing that is selling it to me.

i think some people are missing the point here. this is to get back at those fuckasses of publishing companies. every year they make us spend shit loads of money on books for classes when many times the books are not even helpful or rarely used. yet we still paid $120 for each book. this college algebra book is sold for $160 new! thats insane! i can learn the same material in a library for FREE! the publishing companies rape us. and then when we try and sell our books back to the bookstore we hear this "sorry, we're not buying it back because theres a new edition." HOW HAS ALGEBRA CHANGED IN THE LAST 20 YEARS?! not at all! so why do they always need new editions? fuck those bastards. for years they stole my money. now i buy my books online and used and save atleast 50% every semester. plus i find great study tools like these solutions manuals that the university bookstore would never carry.

so is it really so wrong if im illegally distributing a solutions manual when for years theyve raped my wallet. plus im helping out the students in the class. this kind of tool is a BIG DEAL. i know it makes me feel a lot better when im in a class and i have the solutions manual.

plus i can make a couple bucks.

lol, my latest scheme is stupider so don't worry, I'm looking at taking out a personal loan & putting it into a high interest account which is 5.5% higher than the interest rate on the loan, so I actually make money off what I borrow. I'm probably not going to do it though because i'm so stupid i'd probably not work it out properly

that actually works, but it just depends if you want to go through the hassle of it all. thats usually what stops people. plus is the profit significant enough to make a difference to you? but if you're bored and want to do it for fun, then by all means. i love cheating the system.

if you sell it for 5 bucks on cd. that guy is going to give it away to all his friends. do what my buddy did, well he actually made his own solution manual for thermodynamics but the trick is print it out on dark colored paper, like a red or a blue, but it has to be dark colored. then you sell them for 10 bucks bound with a spiral binding. the beauty of the dark color is they arent photocopiable.... therefore no one can punt you off.

i see your point but im not going through all that effort. i figure a one-time offer, theres gotta be atleast 5 kids in every class that will jump on it. 5 kids times like 5 classes. thats $125. im fine with something like that. even if i just make my initial investment back, which is all i wanted when i came up with this idea, thats fine.

the trick is, im going the first day of class when most people in class havent gotten a chance to meet yet. so are you really going to rely on someone you dont know to let you borrow the solutions? eh, probably not. so hopefully a handful of people will buy the cds each class.
