A couple of subtle ways to tell if there is attraction are;
Touching - a skim of the arm as she is telling you a story
Eye contact - is she looking into your eyes?

Other than that, you're screwed for a foolproof plan because it doesn't exist. Watch how she talks to other people, does she save a certain look for you? Is she attentive?

At the end of the day, I would say ask anyway - you don't ask, you don't get

I know a lot of people who are just 'wicked' flirts. So this doesn't apply all the time. I swear some girls I know take the flirting very far, you'd be hard pressed to believe they aren't interested but really, they just like to flirt.
